Come and enjoy a peaceful respite from the daily grind in this idyllic rural retreat! Guests are welcome to join the daily meditations and any other activities that may coincide with their visit, relax in the beautiful gardens and common lounge, or base themselves here while exploring the stunning Coromandel peninsula. As a Buddhist centre, we request all residents and visitors to follow these five ethical guidelines while on the property: - Protect living beings (refrain from killing, even small insects) - Respect others' belongings (refrain from stealing and taking anything not freely given) - Refrain from using intoxicants, including alcohol and tobacco (to help cultivate clarity of mind and body, and create a safe, calm environment for everyone) - Speak truthfully (refrain from lying) - Refrain from sexual conduct (to create a space for spiritual introspection and development with less distraction) Also please note that our communal kitchen is vegetarian, so guests are requested not to prepare meat or fish here.

Mahamudra Centre is a Tibetan Buddhist retreat centre located on the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. We are situated on 8 acres in the inspirational setting of the Colville Valley, surrounded by meadows, bush and the lovely hills of the Coromandel range. Our proximity to beautiful beaches and breathtaking sea views provide an ambience conducive to peace, calm and healing. Accommodation options include self-contained cabins (with private bathroom and kitchenette), single, double and triple rooms, and tent/car camping and camper van parking (unpowered sites). Guests staying in rooms or camping have access to shared toilets/shower facilities, as well as the communal lounge and kitchen (please note our centre is vegetarian and alcohol-free). While staying at Mahamudra Centre, you are welcome to use our meditation hall for your personal practice. Mahamudra Centre is a charitable trust in New Zealand and affiliated with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT).

Neighbourhood information

The Coromandel Peninsula is an amazing area of New Zealand for swimming, tramping, cycling, boating, family activities and sightseeing. Mahamudra Centre offers a peaceful retreat environment as well as a base for activities in the Colville area. Stunning natural views include Fletcher Bay, Waikawau Bay and Stony Bay. The beautiful Coromandel Coastal Walkway is a must for hikers and cyclists, and sandy swimming beaches are just a 10 minute drive from the centre at Waitete or Otautu Bay. Colville, just up the road, has two excellent cafes and the historical Colville General Store. If you are driving here, you’ll be coming through Thames, the gateway to the Coromandel. Thames has a Saturday morning market, excellent cafes, historical museums, and more. Coromandel Town, only 30 minutes drive from the centre, features art galleries, a small-gauge railway, a gold mine tour, kauri trees, a local history museum, and events like the summer Keltic Fair and the Winter Illume festival. While on the peninsula, you might want to include stops in the Hahei area including Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove. There are many more attractions in Coromandel, so come and explore!
