Húsafell is a beautiful and diverse area in West Iceland, located on the edge of the highlands, between Borgarfjörður and Langjökull. It is a popular destination for both Icelanders and tourists, with a rich nature, history and culture. Location and access • Húsafell is about a 2-hour drive from Reykjavík. • Accessibility is good with paved roads most of the way Nature and landscape • The area is characterized by a diverse landscape: birch and willow forests, lava fields, ravines and mountains. • The lava fields Surtshellir and Víðgelmir are well-known lava caves near Húsafell, from one of the largest lava fields in the country, Hallmundarhraun. • Langjökull towers over the area to the north, and from there flow glacial rivers such as Hvítá and Geitá. Nearby places worth seeing • Deildartunguhver – the most powerful hot spring in Europe. • Hraunfossar and Barnafossar – beautiful waterfalls nearby. • Reykholt – the historical site of Snorri Sturluson. • Kaldidalur – a mountain road that runs north across the highlands. 4x4 car needed. • Glanni and Paradísarlaut – places closer to Bifröst if the journey continues south/west.
