We loved the kindness and availability of the entire staff, which was made also possible by the limited number of villas. All meals were prepared with a high level of care and quality. Our game drives were run by ranger Barry, who always made them fun and informative. The villa was always clean, spacious and comfortable, both in warm and chilly weather. The view on the bush was amazing.

From the moment we arrived, we were very well looked after by Clarinda and the rest of the team. Our lodge was marvellous in every way – an outside rock shower, a huge indoor bath. A beautiful canopied bed to keep the mossies out and a large, very private decking area where we could watch the animals passing by on their way to the watering hole. Housekeeping was just perfect. We never saw them but everything was done for us including putting hot water bottles in our bed for the chilly nights. The food was first class too. The chef obviously takes great pride in the presentation. It was beautiful. The lodge watering hole was just fabulous. One lunchtime, there were 16 elephants drinking from it along with some tiny ones. It was mesmerising and from the viewing tunnel you can get so close to them. Martin our ranger was an absolute star. He went above and beyond to show us the wildlife in the park and we will always be grateful to him for giving us such a magical time. He has encyclopaedic knowledge of everything and his love for the animals shines through. Our twice daily game drives were fantastic. Martin strove to locate different animals each day, using his well-equipped Land Cruiser to reach even the furthest corners of the reserve. His tracking skills were uncanny. One day he followed the tracks of a pack of wild dogs before finally finding them taking a break under a shady bush well away from any recognised path. Stopping for morning coffee and afternoon sundowners in remote areas was always a delight and offered a chance to stretch legs and chat to the other holiday makers. We were so lucky to have Martin and so is Tuningi. We will remember it always.

Rhulani is an amazing lodge in an amazing game reserve. We were taken on twice daily game drives with a very kind interesting and knowledgeable ranger named Willem. We saw all the animals we dreamed of seeing and more, but also learned about plants and insects. The lodge is very beautifully designed, and the private cabins are nice and very comfortable, with a private pool. The beds are super comfortable and have a nice big mosquito net around them (which doesn't touch the bed so doesn't make you feel claustrophobic the way they sometimes do. The food is excellent and the staff is wonderful. Good spaces for hanging out during the day. The lodge has a watering hole where you can see animals throughout the day, which is a wonderful experience.

Exceptional Safari Lodge! Amazing staff and mind blowing rides twice daily. Godfrey was an amazing driver. The food is delicious. We also had a chance to visit the local village which was really interesting. Buffalo Ridge is simply one of the best places we have ever visited. We were very sad to leave. Highly recommended.

We have been to many Game Lodges. Rockfig Lodge offers the best accommodation (probably in entire SA) by far. You rent a complete house. The style is not the typical safari style houses (thatched roof, lots of wood, treetrunks integrated into structure and so on) but very tastefull, outstandingly comfortable and spacious. You don`t miss anything. Large wardrobes, drawers, complete kitchen, Maxibar (stocked to your taste)... you name it. A very large, covered porch. lounge corner, table with 6 seats, youre own fireplace in your private garden, illuminated surrounding (you can switch it of, but it is very nice, if you sit outside in the dark on your private share of paradise and it is not completely dark). The views are absolutely great. In many safari lodges, the view from your room is very limited, in Rockfig it is breathtaking. Most important of course, are game drives. Game drives in Rockfig are as good as in any other lodge. It very much depends on the guide. Our guide was "Honest" and he really has been good (not living on jokes but on knowlegde and really excellent spotting ability). Game driving in Madikwe generally is excellent (we have been here three times already). No private cars, a maximum of three cars on a sighting, and all guides communicate with each other. You never have the feeling of beeing part of a crowd, or participating in a race. Food was also good, not outstanding, service was okay as well ( not as attentive as in much more expensive lodges however) Excellent value for money and really great experience (especially if you prefer to spend some time in private) We would definataly return

Difficult and bumpy road to get there when you cannot locate the proper route to Madikwe River lodge but the magic unravels as soon as you get close : the animals, the vegetation and one lonely but warm lady at the post who welcomes you to adventure! Blissfully peaceful, Matildah gazing at you while the other impalas peer from the bushes, one cheeky monkey sitting on the roof while the invisible chirping and singing lull you to quietude, right next to the river. The lady at the reception readily informed the Chef about my meal preferences and I was served fish, veggies and rice for dinner. The morning safari was conducted by a guide who read the tracks in Nature and drove us to a cheetah, a napping lion, a rising rhino, munching wildebeests and 3 black rhinos not happy at visitors for disturbing their early morn routine ;), and another napping lion! We looked fondly at the baby elephant and had to be careful when a big male elephant "in mas" came our way. It was one beautiful experience.

This reserve only allows visitors that stay in one of the lodges so their are no day tours. The guides all work together so they give eachother locations of animals they’ve spotted but than they go in turns to the animal so they don’t get overwhelmed by a traffic jam of tourists.

Madikwe is reclaimed farmland, so there are not the very large herds you may see in Kruger. Some of them are sizable - for example, they have a herd of African buffalo of nearly 500 head. One of the main draws is that it is Malaria free. The reserve is a good 5-hour drive from Johannesburg, at least. So it is a long way, and the roads in South Africa are not always safe, so consider this - it is worthwhile checking about a flight. The landscapes in the reserve are varied and very beautiful, there are incredible sightings to be had and there is a good variety of animals and birds too.

The two game drives via Tau Game Lodge were exceptional. Israel, the ranger, was very knowledgeable and friendly and was able to track down 4 out 5 of the "big 5" game. It was surreal being so close to some of the animals. Photo ops are aplenty. I have nothing bad to say about Madikwe.

Madikwe is one of the best reserves we ever visited, everything is well looked after and there are some really beautiful spots. We only stayed at one lodge, (Rockfig, which was excellent) so I can't comment on the lodges, but I believe they are all top class. We had 2 safaris per day and we saw the big 5 and a lot of other animals. Beautiful fauna and flora, trees and birds. it was a once in a lifetime experience.
