We loved the wildlife loop. The donkeys were the best. It said do not feed the animals however with the donkeys it said junk food is not good for them, so I brought apples and bananas.....Soooo Fun. We did not find anyplace open to eat at. I ordered pizza delivery. I came fast and hot. I also brought ham cheese,milk pop ect. from home ( We drove from MN) Getting around town was easy. The proximity to Custer State Park is what sold us on staying in Custer. We hiked several trails that provided beautiful views of this State Park. Custer's restaurants were great. The Black Hills and Custer State Park feel magical and are well recommended. Surrounded on all sides by wide open plains and Big Sky Country, they offer a completely localised contrast, being windingly vertical, but on an intimate scale, and cooler, with pine forests smelling of resin and brooks and lakes and odd rock formations. Add in the occasional Bison or Pronghorn or soaring eagle and it’s hard to beat. Note: Sylvan Lake can get very busy.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

Unfortunately it was offseason and a lot of restaurants, the brewery, and shops were closed. But it also meant fewer people. Custer is a quaint town centrally located to the state park, Rushmore, Wind Cave, and Jewel Cave. Liked most: Eagles Landing Lodge, beautiful setting, close to lots of cool things to do. Liked least: Most of restaurants were closed for the season. Knowing what I know now I’d go 2-3 weeks earlier. Bonus comment: I had a serious medical emergency while there. I live in Houston and the care I received there was equal to what I could have received at home.Guest review byDoug - 10.0
The town was friendly and clean.
The town was friendly and clean. Also the eating places were great as well. We didn't see any breakfast cafe's but we were there in early October and a lot of businesses were already shut down for the normal winter weather. But our morning muffins at the Chalet Motel were great, along with the fruit and juices. All in all, it was a great mini vacation and enjoyed all the surrounding areas. The Wildlife Loop, Buffalo roundup, Needles Hwy, Iron Mountain Road, Spearfish area and do not miss the "Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, SD".Guest review byJamesUnited States
