A Capital City with a Small Town Charm
The charming Slovenian capital, Ljubljana is the only large city in the country. Dominated by the Castle Hill with Medieval Ljubljana Castle on top, the city is a picturesque Balkan mix of architectural styles, romantic bridges and scenic views.
Due to two major earthquakes in 1511 and 1895, which destroyed many buildings, the Old Town features a range of styles: from Roman period, through Medieval Baroque to Vienna Secession. This trend exists throughout the city with many Gothic-style buildings featuring elements from different periods added later on.
Strolling along the Ljubljanica River you will see the Triple Bridge, connecting two parts of the centre and beautifully lit in the evenings. Make a stop at the Prešelen Square, Ljubljana’s most popular meeting point with Franciscan Church of Annunciation and one of the main shopping streets, Čop Street.

Ljubljana is a beautiful city full of life. When visiting a few days are enough to walk around town, but Ljubljana feels particularly special because it gives of that energy that even though it's quite small, if you live there, there are always things to do and discover. Ljubljana also has beautiful antique shops, used and old book or music shops, which is a lot of fun to explore. This city is amazing.
This city is amazing. It is full of people but strangely calm, relaxing and very pleasant. Everybody seems to be free of stress. It also feels very safe. Everybody is relaxed, walking their dogs or riding their bicycles. It's not a cheap city (especially along the river where the tourist places are) but it is worth it. We only took the bus once but it was very easy to figure it out. And the ticket can be paid directly on the bus with any type of card. The city is full of nice shops, beautiful and clean streets, beautiful buildings, cafes and resturants everywhere. The boat rides are also a pleasant activity. An interesting city to visit, a mixture of nice old buildings, well preserved historical monuments and interesting landmarks of city's architect Joze Plecnik. Interestingly despite nazi and italian fascists occupation, the city continued to evolve and Plecnik's plans continued during WW2. The city is split between centuries of Austrian domination and post WW2 communisf regims that ruled the country, while it was part of former Yugoslavia. Nice people though, strongly recommend taking one of the free tour (which starts from old city centre), good English speakers and collectively focused on promoting their city and country. Very commendable. Most important attractions are in the city centre and they all have the city castle as a not to miss spot (offers a belvedere point for the city and the outskirts). Ljubljana is a very green-focused place. We loved the forests. The main tourist area is very pretty. As we visited in early August it was very busy particularly on the Thursday and Friday. We had wonderful weather (between 27 and 34 degrees) on our 5 day (Wednesday to Monday) stay. There are a plethora of cafes and restaurants along the river and staff are friendly and efficient. There are a number of different markets each week with a bric-a-brac market on Sunday mornings. It is clean and friendly. The castle is a must see. It is a good place to have a day trip to Lake Bled and Trieste. It is an easy place to walk around as long as you are wearing comfortable footwear. We eat at a variety of different eateries all of which were enjoyable. There were a number of different types of musical entertainment - e g small brass orchestra, jazz 3 piece, all of which added to the atmosphere.Guest review byLauraUnited Kingdom
