Just a beautiful location and base for hiking the Heaphy and Oparara Basin as well as visiting other beautiful areas nearby. Definitely worth the drive north of Westport. Miss it and you miss out on so much.

Fabulous location for doing some beautiful bush walks.

Fabulous location for doing some beautiful bush walks. The information centre was really good and ladies very helpful. The 2 highlights of our trip were the The Dutch Oven Bakery, a must visit if in Karamea the food is divine and the second would be the Oparara National Park. We opted to do the guided honeycomb cave and arch walk and it was well worth the price to see such an amazing cave system and basically untouched forest. The guide Paul was very informative and went out of his way to make the day special and memorable for us. There are also many other lovely walks such as the Fenian Cave and the Heaphy track, plus a beach that goes forever with very few people on it. We just loved our visit.

You can't get more isolated than this area. Its special climate is experienced here. The caves are incredible. If you can make the available time, Karamea is a must on your tour list. The native bush here is out of this World.

Karamea is a vibrant community with a lively main street, excellent produce from a local butcher and fresh patisserie from a local baker. On Sat there was a local market with community choir singing Christmas carols. We had a delicious breakfast at Vinnies (art gallery upstairs) and an amazing family dinner at The Last Resort.

This is an untouched part of New Zealand with pristine estuaries teeming with birdlife, long stretches of coastline and beautiful bush. A place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and tourist meccas. A place to take time to enjoy the many facets the region has to offer.

One travel to Karamea to see the Oparara Arches which are of an exceptional beauty. Also it appeared that there were plenty of mountain bike opportunities and a great beach. Karamea is the end of the road. One the way to Karamea, we visisted the Historic Deniston Mining Museaum and Industrial Heritage. (Also very worth while!)
