It has a relaxed quality for such a big city. There's no end of things to see and do (book in advance though). Exploring by foot is great and you can easily get around on the tram network. Lots of shops, if that's your thing and plenty of places to eat - street food type places were our go-to, restaurants can be pricey. It's great for families. Shops, food and sightseeing are highlights. Book everything before you go or you won’t get in particularly Ann Franks house etc. Make sure you do a canal trip and cheese tasting - highly recommended. Felt very safe despite the reputation Amsterdam has for relaxed laws and never felt uncomfortable. So much to see and do - it’s a lovely city. I was only in Amsterdam for 24 hours for a cultural event, but still found time to walk round the lovely Vondelpark, so close to the hotel.
