We stayed for one night with our two dogs and we were so well looked after by the staff at the Tickled Trout Inn. The food was absolutely delicious, we had Sunday lunch and dinner later that evening and the breakfast the next day was gorgeous. The staff were so kind and helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Very highly recommended!

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

It’s very very very busy literally all the time, no matter when you visit York it’s manic. It’s beautiful but I find it hard work with kids. Lovely if you can wander The Shambles I would avoid walking down, photo op at the end of the street. People literally walk down there and it’s near on impossible to stop to look at any of the shops Gorgeous to sit by the Minster with a coffee and sandwich. Ask Italian is worth a visit for its impressive interior and lots of lovely independent coffee shops on Micklegate.. away from the crowds

Lovely little place for a weekend, just don't choose the bank holiday weekend, or when York races are on. We made this mistake and the city was heaving with tourists making the town Centre too crowded to enjoy. We had a family mail for a big group out at the Dormouse pub, which was lovely - great staff, good food and a lovely atmosphere in the dining room.

All in all York is delightful. Don't miss out on visiting the Minster. Pay attention as there are free tours, make sure to check once there. The guides are very knowledgeable and fun. Go for a walk down the Shambles as well, quite lovely as well.
