We visited a few local villages during our short stay.

We visited a few local villages during our short stay. Ashbourne being one of the largest with a good variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. At the moment there are quite a few roadworks happening in the town as they are re-laying paving etc, but it didn't affect our visit too greatly. We also visited Leek, which is a beautiful village about a 15 minute drive from the house. Again, very quaint with a few cafes, shops and bars with lots of lovely buildings. Hartington village is a gorgeous unspoilt place, just a handful of shops with a fantastic cafe to eat and buy local produce. It gets very busy but it does have a small car park for customers and I'd definitely recommend a visit there. Nearby is another large cafe and a small visitor centre, also public toilets (which used to be the station). We went for a beautiful walk along what was once a railway track. Buxton is also well worth a visit, with its splendid buildings, shops and cafes galore, and while we were there we visited the art exhibition at the pavillion - featuring local (and other) artists' work. Approx 30 minute drive. On our trips to these places, we found lots of parking spaces en route so we could stop to take photos of the magnificent countryside and hills in this stunning area. We are a family of 4 adults, but we noted that there is plenty in the surrounding area to cater for families with younger children. All in all there is plenty to fill your days with only a short car trip required, plus it is an ideal base to visit further afield, especially if you are a seasoned walker/rambler.
