We flew to Algiers from Gatwick, in order to catch the train...
We flew to Algiers from Gatwick, in order to catch the train to Oran. Train journey was great - took about 6 hours to Oran, and the return journey took eight hours... Spent very little time in Algiers real, but the City Hotel was well located for our needs to travel via Agha train station. A fascinating country - not a tourist destination - and actually, all the better for that.... very friendly people, who are particularly welcoming to English visitors - once they recognised that we were not French... Great city with good vibes, lot's to see and visit.
Great city with good vibes, lot's to see and visit. The buildings are magnificent and getting lost in the narrow streets of the Casbah (Citadelle) is a great experience. I will definitely go back to Algiers to explore more. It felt very safe walking around and people were very welcoming and kept on repeating "Soyez les bienvenus!" with a big smile on their face.Guest review byG1lle5France - 10.0
Huge & vibrant city!
Huge & vibrant city! Beautiful colonial French architecture & on the other hand old Cahbah of Algiers which you should visit as well. It is a unique kind of medina, Islamic city. There are monuments to visit & also typical traditional Casbah houses & have a great view to the city from the terrace where you can enjoy a drink! There are many interesting spots to visit in Algiers & around Algeria (from museums, monuments to mosques). There are many local restaurants with reasonably priced food & you can do shopping of souvenirs or some brass or silver if you like it.. Just be aware that they drive very fast & do not keep distance between cars like in Europe, they drive fast & too close car to car behind & it can make you very stressed & nervous!Guest review byMilenaCroatia - 10.0

I visited Algeri, there are many interesting places to visit, the Centre around Places des Martyrs, Casbah, Monument des Martyrs, Notre Dame d'Afrique, Les Jardins d'Essays, promenade along the sea. Good public transport: train, metro, bus, minibus. I could not pay with credit cards anywhere, not even at the airport.Guest review byRobertaItaly - 6.0

Great French architecture though missing maintenance takes it toll. Nice sandy beaches. Overall, all extremely cheap by European standards. Old city Casbah, on Unesco list, is amazing example of Arab architecture. The negative is, as anywhere in Algeria, incredible waste/trash everywhere. When buying a drink in plastic bottle or a croissant, a plastic bag is automatically given. It all ends in the streets or in nature. Algeria is not a tourist place so beware of missing services, as in Tunisia and Morocco. But French is widely spoken and almost all signs are in French additionally to Arabic, so orientation is easy. Airport is nice building but that is where positives end. Chaos, no use of credit cards, delays of most flights, bad signing.Guest review byVladimir1539Czech Republic
