FAQs about hotels in San Francisco

An Icon of Liberalism

Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.

Surrounded on 3 sides by water, it is spread over steep hills that make for great photo opportunities. None better than the zig-zag Lombard Street seen in many a film. Other movie stars are the streetcars plying the hill climbs – a little touristy, but still worth trying.

In the middle of the bay is Alcatraz island, famed for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t fancy going inside, the views towards the bridge and city are unparalleled.

Nowhere in San Francisco is life more laidback than on the Pacific beaches. Hire a bike and head out there via the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. The clam chowder served in (yes, actually in!) bread is a delight. Chinatown also has a great selection of good value restaurants.

As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want to stay in apartments along those lines, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something to suit. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here.

All big cities have a downside and that doesn’t exclude SF.

All big cities have a downside and that doesn’t exclude SF. Yes, there are some areas that are exacerbated by homelessness and decline of business. However, that isn’t the whole story. The city still has vibrant neighborhoods, incredible sights, and extraordinary dining options you’d be hard to find elsewhere. Make sure you go beyond the Pier 39 area or Golden Gate Bridge; yes quintessential. Some other great highlights include a day trip to Angel Island, an outing to Crissy Field or Baker Beach or in the presidio area in general, visiting the Lincoln Park neighborhood with the Legion of Honor and surrounding trails and cliff views, Golden Gate Park with the Japanese tea garden, the botanical gardens, and the several museums like de Yound and California Academy of Sciences, the food in the mission neighborhood alone could be a day….the options are endless and that’s just SF. Plenty of surrounding suggestions like Muir Woods, Sausalito, Oakland, Berkeley, Napa and Sonoma, Monterey Bay, Point Reyes, Santa Cruz to name a few.

I only had two nights and one full day. I love walking.

I only had two nights and one full day. I love walking. I walked 30km all around SF. Golden gate. Ocean beach. The city. Everything. Also used public transport to and from airport. For me it is all about the beauty of the The Bay and the buildings architecture and general scenery. Only downsides - Chinatown was crap - nothing like the real thing - full of crap tourist gifts - very few restaurants and very few Chinese people. Fisherman’s wharf is a bit overrated too. But it’s ok for a quick walk to get the feel of it all. Only other downside is some of the less safe areas in the downtown area.

Since the homeless were hustled out of the City to make it...

Since the homeless were hustled out of the City to make it look good for the Chinese visitors a while ago, it's not as bad as it was but still not great. However, there are still many car break-ins happening and are warned by the hotels to not leave anything in your car. The DeYoung Museum, The Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park, Japantown, China Town, The Momo and the wharfs are all favorite places to visit. Getting around is very slow due to traffic and parking is expensive. When you leave the City, do not attempt it past 2:30PM as traffic is barely creeping. I suggest taking Lift or Uber around the City during your stay, they are everywhere and inexpensive. We always eat in Japantown, restaurants in the Filmore District, and just outside of Golden Gate Park. Enjoy the City as there is a lot to experience.

We stayed in union Square area and it was a 5 minute walk from the Powel station bart. The area felt safe and clean, we stayed away from the Tenderloin. Taking the cable cars to peir 39 was fun, so many great places to eat seafood and visit the shops, we saw an improvement in panhandling and streets were clean we are already planning our next visit. We recommend eating at the Sears restaraunt and Lori's 50's diner, the Matador for Mexican food, and The Chancellor Hotel was excellent.

The location of the be Handlery Union Square Hotel is fantastic. This is the first time I have visited San Francisco before and the prime location made getting around the city so much easier. Upon arrival in the morning, our room was ready and they happily accommodated us by letting us check in well before check in time. The staff were helpful and friendly, we were lucky enough to get a room upgrade and a goodie bag to make our stay even more special as we were celebrating our anniversary. Overall a great trip and I would stay here again.

Spotless hotel in a great location. Neighbourhood is very safe and has plenty of bars & restaurants to enjoy. We saw some bad reviews for the car park around the corner so decided to park at a secure car park on union street roughly 10 mins walk away, it was $30 a for 24hrs and very secure. The hotel’s loading bay at the entrance makes unpacking and repacking the car with luggage super easy. Also the rooftop has fantastic views of the city. Overall by far the best option we had found in San Francisco, especially for the price.

Tea/cordial time in the afternoon was great as was coffee in the mornings. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Walking distance to Union Square and many restaurants in the area. The room was spacious (2 bedroom suite) and the decor was wonderful. The older theme fit the hotel and its historic nature. It felt like a bed and breakfast but without the breakfast. All in all it was a wonderful stay and we will definitely stay there again when we go back next year.

Good location, almost on Union Square with all its' upmarket shops. Friendly, obliging staff. Quirky hotel - there's a theatre on 2nd floor and some society called Elks Lodge have a huge presence / history here. Comfortable lounge / reception area where they serve complimentary sherry each afternoon and coffee / biscuits each morning. A nice touch. Generous size bedroom, walk-in wardrobe and very nice bathroom with plush towels and toiletries.

We recently stayed at Executive Hotel Vintage Court during our trip to San Francisco, and I have mixed feelings about my experience. While there were some positive aspects, there were also several areas that left me feeling underwhelmed. Firstly, the location of Executive Hotel Vintage Court was convenient, as it was centrally located in downtown San Francisco. This allowed for easy access to popular attractions and public transportation.

This hotel is in a superb location, just a few steps away from Union Square and very close to the cable car line to Fisherman's Wharf. Good location on the Union Square edge of Chinatown and a 20 minute walk to North Beach and SOMA. The hotel feels boutique-y and smaller than it is, with rooms that are nicely appointed and a very comfy bed. While we were in town there was the annual Lunar Festival a few blocks over so the area was especially lively with street carnivals, food and musical performances.
