From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

Plymouth is a lively and interesting city in a spectacular coastal location. The view from the Hoe looking out over the harbors to the neighboring sea is breathtaking. We stayed in the Barbican area right on the water above the Mayflower Steps at the Admiral McBride pub. The National Aquarium and Mayflower Museum are only steps away plus numerous restaurants, bistros, pubs, and shops. Plus it’s the home of Sir Francis Drake. The Town Centre was an easy walk uphill. Several car hires are within easy walking distance as well if you plan to visit neighboring Cornwall.

The main entrance has two short flights of stairs up to reception and no lift in that part of the building. Difficult for people with heavy luggage etc and the back entrance is confusing for new visitors (ok once you get a feel for the place). A couple of days in Plymouth itself is probably enough but the hotel is conveniently close to both the train station and bus depot making it easy to do day trips to Exeter, Penzance, Torquay, Totnes etc

Very little parking in the centre.
Very little parking in the centre. Plymouth is quite hilly for those with limited mobility. The little Barbican Theatre is great. Centre can get a bit lairy after Plymouth Argyle have played at home.
We really enjoyed the stay because of many aspects such as where it is located and how close it is to everything, like the sea was only a 4 minute walk and so was the tesco express. The hotel is very friendly to dogs and it is very welcoming. When you first come in Nigel greets you and answers any questions about Plymouth that you would like to know and also hands out a map to you pointing out the best places where to visit. The most important part is that you are guaranteed parking space for a very little price.
We are really enjoying.
I received a warm welcome at this family-run hotel in a superb location just minutes away from Plymouth Hoe. My room was very clean and comfortable. There is a wide breakfast choice served by a friendly and efficient waitress in a light and airy room- no windowless basement breakfast room here as I have encountered elsewhere! I will be making several trips to Plymouth and it took me a while to find the right place to stay. I am happy to have finally found the Invicta as it meets all my needs.
excellent value for money, but it is university halls accommodation and general cleanliness is what is to be expected for such a premises, which is below what you might expect for a small hotel etc. But it is centrally located in Plymouth and no complaints regarding the stay cost. A good cheap / budget option if you're there for a couple of days. Parking is nearby on a pay per hour basis, £1.50 per hour, or £2 for overnight after 6pm - 8am, which again is good value.
When we arrived we were greeted by some lovely staff! We checked in really quickly and were told we were guest of the day! Meaning we had complimentary breakfast in the morning and 2x free drinks! The location is amazing right outside the shopping centre and it’s so easy to get to other places in Plymouth. Really recommend this hotel!
I liked the location - only a two minute walk from Plymouth Hoe. Apartment was spacious and with good facilities. I chose the property because it offered good value for money compared to the very high prices for hotels in the area, including basic offerings like Travelodge. For less money, I got a whole apartment and a great location.
Very clean and comfortable. Hotel has new owners that have spent a small fortune on renovation, so spectacularly shiny and new!
Good rates and very close to all amenities, 15 minute walk to main promanard, from there you can enjoy fabulous views.
The room was comfy, just beware of noisy seagulls!!
The property was in an ideal location for my visit, just a couple of minutes walk from The Hoe. I had gone to Plymouth to explore its history and the hotel was perfect for that (I even managed to get a space in the hotel parking for the duration of my visit!).
Beautiful place, excellent staff, rooms very large with all amenities,i like the free parking and ideally situated, breakfast is fantastic with lovely fresh food and good selection, cannot fault this hotel and will always stay here when i visit Plymouth
We were going to an event at Plymouth Hoe so the location was ideal as a 5 minute walk!! The hotel also has parking which was fab. The girl on reception was running the show and was lovely bless her. She was really friendly and extremely efficient.
Fabulous locaiton with parking in the city centre of Plymouth - a real find! Very well equipped and extremely comfortable. Ideal for busisness trips, perfect for tourist visits (12m walk to the Hoe), and next to the university.
The property was very comfortable and an excellent space for my needs as I was visiting Plymouth. It was an easy walk to most places in town. It had all of the conveniences I needed. I would absolutely stay here again.
The staff are so helpful ..nothing is a problem fur them if asked for extra milk etc.
We stay there all the time when we go to Plymouth.
Hotel is very handy .right by the town center .
So easy access to everything
The Copthorne Hotel is always are go to hotel when visiting Plymouth, perfect location, the staff are always polite & friendly, the rooms are always clean & comfortable, breakfast is outstanding
The location was decent and they offered some parking spaces for free. We were lucky enough to be able to get a hotel parking space. The breakfast was very good, and the staff were friendly.
Great location for our travels to Plymouth & on to Devon & Cornwall. Staff most accommodating, with their service. All were friendly & polite from desk, to cleaning personal.
