How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThis is possibly my favourite hotel worldwide. It’s luxurious in a relaxed tropical way, and felt homely and welcoming. The location is incredible - it’s so close to the sea and there’s always something to see. The swimming pool is large and the sunbed space never felt overcrowded. We had a gorgeous first floor room with a balcony and a hammock. The service is impeccable and the staff really friendly and helpful (shout out to Big Joe who was just brilliant!). The bed was large and really comfortable and we appreciated the mosquito net. The bathroom came with all the usual touches (and I actually needed the sewing kit this time!). The position within the town is fantastic- we pottered around Stonetown a lot and it was very easy for taxis and boat trips.
The WiFi is a bit erratic but as it’s not (thank goodness) a sterile business hotel we were fine about that.
Dear Michael, Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! We're truly honored to be considered one of your favourite hotels worldwide. It’s great to hear that you enjoyed the relaxed luxury, stunning location, and warm hospitality, Big Joe will be especially delighted with your kind mention! We’ve noted your comment about the WiFi and will continue working on improving it. We look forward to welcoming you back soon! Regards, Zanzibar Serena.

Verified reviewLocation, pool area and views of the sea.
Booked twin room for two persons, which we got but it was down as twin room for solo occupancy. They then tried to charge me additional $100 which would obviously have gone direct to them rather than booking.com. Claimed it was a very good price! Had already paid in advance through booking.com Finally agreed on $50 after asking to see the manager. I accepted it was down as one person but felt everything at hotel was trying to get as much as they could out of you. Turned out to be an expensive room and definitely not worth what I paid. Bathroom was very old with shower that just gave a trickle of water. Very basic. Obviously got the weakest room having booked through booking.com. Standard twin room. Breakfast was also very poor but great view if the sea. They could do so much more with the restaurant but it just about passes.
Dear Catherine Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're glad you appreciated our location, pool area, and sea views. We’re truly sorry to hear about the challenges you experienced regarding the room booking and bathroom condition. Your comments are taken seriously, and we will look into the concerns you've raised, especially regarding communication and consistency in service. We always strive to offer clear, fair, and transparent guest experiences, and it's clear we fell short in this instance. We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again in the future and provide a much-improved experience. Warm regards, Zanzibar Serena Hotel

Verified reviewExcellent location and exceptional service. It’s located within the stone town and has amazing ocean views. Also has access to a small beach. The food is their restaurant is great for days when you don’t feel like going out. Breakfast in the morning is elaborate with buffet style options as well as an omelette station. The staff is excellent and very helpful in anything you need. We stayed here a few days and enjoyed our stay very much. If we ever visit Zanzibar again, we’d likely prefer staying here.
Liked everything!

Verified reviewThe room was exquisite. Balcony on 2 sides with pool and sea views. Staff were fantastic. Food was great. Everyone genuinely friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend.
2 things. On step from hotel to pool is just one small step before 5 or 6 other steps. I tripped on this because you cannot see it very well sit is all the same colour. A strip of white would help you to see it better especially at night. After these steps from there to restaurants there is lighting but not enough at night. Also as I had a sore knee and I was li.ping it would be nice to have hand rails at all of the steps on the property outside.
Dear Lynda, Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful feedback. We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed the room, views, food, and our team’s hospitality. We also truly appreciate your suggestions regarding the steps, lighting, and handrails your input is invaluable, and we will certainly take it into consideration to enhance safety and comfort for all our guests. Verified reviewWe had a fantastic stay, the staff were absolutely fantastic and made us feel so welcome as soon as we arrived. We arrived early morning from a long plane journey and they were incredibly welcoming. Big Yusef in particular went above and beyond and he easily organised taxis, walking tours and visits to Prison Island for us. All of the staff were really friendly and helpful. The pool and bar area is ideally located and a great spot for watching the sunset. The breakfast was really varied.
Dear Amelia, Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re thrilled to hear you had such a fantastic stay and felt so welcomed by our team. We’ll be sure to pass on your special thanks to Big Yusef he’ll be delighted to hear your appreciation. It was a pleasure hosting you, and we hope to welcome you back again soon!
