How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewMost of the staff were wonderful. The food, hotel and location.
Two of the staff were not very nice. The guy in charge at the restaurant, there were 2 and the african guy was really good. However the ?Indian guy was horrible to staff and NOT nice at all, I actually felt sorry for the staff when he was on. Also one of the reception staff (the girl in the blue uniform) had a bit of a bad attitude. All other staff were great.

Verified reviewGreat location and superb roof terrace with a pool and amazing views. Great breakfast buffet and sundowner drinks.
It's a bit noisy from the street, and they also have live music on the roof terrace until 11pm every evening

Verified reviewThe hotel was great. The only issue I had was that it wasn't clear on Booking.com side that the charges did not include the tourist tax. It was only upon arriving that I was told that I had to pay the tourist tax. I'm happy to pay this tax, but it would be less confusing if this was clearly. Also, I originally clicked rooms with breakfast included, but when I went to pay, I was switched over to a room without breakfast, which I didn't realized till checking in.

Verified reviewExcellent location as it is near the city attractions and market Roof top resturant offers great food
If you have kids the live music at the roof top resturant might bother them as they stop at 10:30 pm or 11pm . Otherwise it is perfect .

Verified reviewWe were allowed to check in and leave our luggage in a storage room on arrival. Our room was also ready early so we were grateful for this after an early flight. Room was nice, airey, cleaned every day and mosquito net closed each evening. Shower was good too. Pool was nice and had towels up there to use. Dining area had great views especially at sunset. Staff were great. Location was also amazing. Could walk anywhere and everywhere we needed.
Breakfast buffet wasn't included in our package which was disappointing as I think we were the only people not availing of it. Happens all over Tanzania but must be noted that the electricity/ power cuts are common. Unfortunately one such power cut happened when we were in the lift and we ended up being trapped in there for 5+ mins but got out eventually. Pool was on the roof next to the dining area so it felt a bit weird next to that.

Verified reviewThe staff were very helpful. We wanted an extra bed for my child that was supposed to be charged extra but the staff were very accommodating and gave us for free. The location of the hotel in close proximity to the main attractions of Stone Town was a plus. The rooms and toilets were very clean and tidy with good toilet amenities.
If you are someone who likes to sleep early, then you are in for a very uncomfortable ride at this hotel. The loud and live music in the penthouse level - which is in the 4th floor - of the hotel starts at around 8 pm and goes all the way to around 11 pm EVERYT SINGLE NIGHT !. There is no way you can have a quite sleep before 11 pm !. And if they gave you a room in the 3rd floor, then you will be woken up at 4 AM with very loud, banging, and disturbing noises from the penthouse floor (again) from the restaurant staff who start preparing for breakfast. It seems to me that this hotel was constructed with very poor sound insulation system which allow - and perhaps magnify - noise from the 4th floor to penetrate easily to the lower floors. In our 3rd day at the hotel we could not bare this any longer and asked the reception to change our room to a lower floor level and they managed to do that. The lower floor rooms were noticeably better, particularly for the noises in the early hours of the day.

Verified reviewLocation is perfect for exploring Stonetown. Also a great place to meet friends for a sundowner at the rooftop even if you aren’t staying at the hotel. We have stayed at Maru Maru multiple times. If you are new to Zanzibar, the staff will help you plan excursions. Also they will pick you up from the airport which is super helpful upon arrival.
Most properties in Stonetown are not very accessible for people with mobility issues.
