How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewHotel is central in stone town about 5-10 minutes away by foot from all the sights. The staff are really helpful and friendly. Rooms are spotless and quiet even though you are in the center of it all. Really appreciated the unlimited free drinking water.

Verified reviewThe location was really good and the breakfast was really good too. They have drinkable free water available all the time, that was super useful.
Maybe the rooms were a bit dark, there aren't pretty much natural light in the rooms.

Verified reviewPerfect place in Stone Town for my stay. I loved the decor and the breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The staff with friendly and attentive. It was a nice touch to have various seating areas around if you want to read/chill with a book outside of the rooms and the cold/hot water dispensers on each floor was a nice touch. I was a solo traveller in room 12 - 5 this was perfect for one person and I loved the balcony.
The shower/bathroom is a wet room, so it will be wet on the floors until it’s evaporated/dried up!

Verified reviewThe room my husband and I stayed in was very nice, and was nicely decorated. The whole hotel is beautifully decorated too. There was another room adjacent to it where my daughters stayed that had the bathroom. It was nice to have a suite of rooms. The location was great and the staff so friendly and helpful. I would stay at this hotel again, but just not in any basement rooms. The room value was good and so was the included breakfast.
Unfortunately, the rooms were at street level, and the room my daughters were in was noisy because of that and I could smell car exhaust in the bathroom from the street because there was only a shutter on the window. There was also a faint smell of sewage in their room. After I left an excellent review on paper that the manager gave me and we checked out, my daughter told me that sewage had somehow leaked onto her suitcase and made it and some of her clothes smell bad. I also didn’t like that I had to go through the other room to use the bathroom.
Dear White, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the décor, friendly staff, location, and breakfast, and that having a suite of rooms worked well for your family. We apologise for the issues you experienced with the room your comments are very important to us, and we will review our room assignments and facilities to prevent similar situations in the future. We appreciate your understanding and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back. Warm regards, The Team at Shaba Boutique Hotel

Verified reviewIf a reasonably-priced comfortable stay in the heart of Stone Town is required, the Sheba Boutique Hotel is worth a stay. The staff are wonderful and the breakfast is good with delicious coffee. Rooms are understandably a little small but clean. Climbing the narrow stairs could be a problem for some but help with luggage is readily offered. Thanks again to all who made our stay most pleasant.

Verified reviewShaba Boutique Hotel has a warm and welcoming ambiance, especially if you're not a fan of hotel chains and prefer more of a homestay atmosphere. The overall vibe makes for a peaceful and memorable stay if you're looking for a relaxing, slow-paced experience. The location is great for exploring the local Stone Town area.
The Wi-Fi was down during my entire stay, which was just one day. While this was inconvenient, it may not be fair to hold it against them, as it operates more like a homestay. One thing to note is that the property is located inside the Stone Town area with no direct access for cars, which sometimes requires you to carry your luggage and walk to find transport—something many guests might not enjoy.
Dear Sujesh Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed the warm and welcoming ambiance and appreciated the peaceful, authentic atmosphere. Our central location is indeed ideal for exploring the charm of Stone Town. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the Wi-Fi during your stay and appreciate your understanding regarding our unique setting within the historic town, which offers an authentic experience but sometimes requires a short walk. We hope to welcome you back soon for another memorable visit! Warm regards, The Team at Shaba Boutique Hotel
