How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe room and facilities were clean with good sized storage under the bed The location was great, very close to the CBD. Bed was comfortable.
The Wifi was poor with minimal connection. when booking the website sad parking however when I got my check in details the day before they stated "limited parking" which is ok because when we arrived there was free street parking across the road but it needs to be clearer when booking as onsite parking was a big reason as to why I booked there. Additionally the place was fully booked when I stayed and there are limited showers/toilets so often would be waiting for a shower. Plus the curtains on the bunks only go 3/4 of the way across so not ideal for keeping out the light and privacy.

Verified review1. Ive always liked the backpacker, bunk-beds concept. 2. Ensuite - consistent hot water, which was great! 3. Clean room, ample space to put ur stuff. I didnt bring my luggage with me, just a backpack. 4. Sufficient bathrooms around the backpackers. 5. Comfortable living room the chairs were huge and comfy. Theres tv, games, books... keeps u well occupied. They have game nights, quiz nights.. very entertaining. 6. Location was superb, near town but not too close. Good walk to and fro. Peaceful location. 7. Great staff. Very smiley and friendly.
1. Parking. Theres space just outside the backpackers, that im very grateful but the parking below, was very deceiving and the space is over tight. They should mention when its full or a staff to guide. My car got scratched. 2. The fridges (theres 3 to 4 in the house), all full. I had to leave my groceries in the car. But i think its a Queenstown thing. 3. Closing the kitchen at 10pm. I think the no further cooking instructions were okie but to not be able to use the tables there to do your own thing, was quite grr.. forced to sleep early? Lol. Minor grouse.

Verified reviewLocation is excellent. Bed was comfy, room was clean and there is heater in the room. Shower was spacious and staff friendly and helpful.
It was hard to use hair tools in the mirror as there was no close plug to the only mirror in the bathroom. The seam in the middle of the beds, I assume where the two single beds have been joined, was uncomfortable to lay on.

Verified reviewI absolutely loved the people, the staff, the atmosphere. It is super clean, cosy, safe, close to everything. I met incredible people there, and I'll definitely remember my stay at The Flaming Kiwi! I highly recommend this hostel if you want to stay in a friendly environment, and have a sense of "homie" vibe. For me, it was perfect and exactly what I was looking for :)
That my stay there was too short!! 😆

Verified reviewNice, calm vibe at this hostel, esp. compared with the party hostels closer to the city centre. Still a good location though and appreciated the quiet neighbourhood. Comfy beds, plenty of kitchen space and equipment. The toilets and showers are good quality but a bit short on supply for the number of people, I had to wait more than once for a shower to free up. Cozy lounge area with a guitar.
Free parking is only 3 spaces and the street is usually fully parked up, so you have to walk a couple of minutes to park in another nearby residential street.

Verified reviewThe living room is actually nice. The location is good as well. It's close to the city center and to a super market.
The bed was the worst I had in my entire 5 month NZ stay. The mattress is so worn out, you basically lie on the wooden lath floor. The bed squeaks if whenever you move. I was afraid of turning around to not wake the room mates up. On top of that, the rooms smells like wet socks. (This was due to the room, not to the other travelers. I stayed here for a week, and the smell was omnipresent, even right after cleaning with open windows.)

Verified reviewThe location is perfect. Close to the city center and to everything. The stuff was super friendly and they help you with everything. Many thanks to Ramon (miss you alreadyyy!!!). They clean everyday the hostel (toilets, kitchen, common area) and they vacuum the rooms every morning. The towles is 3NZD charge. As a female solo traveller everything was super friendly even the people that they were staying in. I really enjoyed my staying there.
