We had a shocking experience with Hotel Mirage Regency in Kathmandu. Despite having great reviews and a high rating on booking.com, when we showed up to the hotel this was complete opposite of our experience. The hotel images we witnessed on your website did not match up to the in person sights we were presented with. This included old and broken furniture, dirty bedding, broken curtains and windows that would not close. The walls and tiles of the bathroom were cracked and not upheld to a standard of cleanliness. The room itself reeked of cigarette smoke. Additionally, the mirror on the wall that backed on to a “staff only room” had a hole in the top corner which appeared to be a peephole. We felt extremely uncomfortable and unsafe in this environment. This was after our unfriendly and unwelcoming experience at the front desk. We were greeted by staff members who were harassing and hostile towards us. They did not have a computer system and were quite unaware of our booking, questioning what room we wanted. They were trying to provide free upgrades for us and include free breakfast. This made us feel quite uncomfortable as we felt it was an unreliable business. When they went to take our passports for the booking confirmation, they seem to be quite reluctant to hand them back to us often questioning why there was no address on the passports. The male receptionist asked a lot of unnecessary questions that did not relate to our booking which also made us feel uncomfortable such as where we've come from, why we're here and what our address was in our home country. We requested to see the room before payment as we had an off feeling about the hotel, however the staff refused, asking for payment immediately before seeing the room. When we went to pay, they encouraged us to pay in USD via the eftpos machine. We did not want to do this and wanted to pay in Nepalese Rupee (NPR). We were saying we would like to pay in Nepalese Rupee on Visa.
