How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewHanibal helped me check in. Kind man, and making sure the guests are helped. VEry good information about the ferry, the bus schedule, etc. Good prices for scooter rentals. Breakfast is included, although it wasn't very much for a hike of multiple hours, but it gets you started. Kitchen is available for guests to prepare meals. Water is potable.
The hostel is pretty dark. There are windows in the room, but they lead to the patio inside, which prevents much light from coming in. Even with the light on, it still feels dark. The bathroom connected to the room is the same. I was the only one that night, but I'm sure it's a little damp with a lot of people. Besides, a group of around 15 Isrealis were in the hostel. Quiet time is from 22 pm to 07 am. They didn't respect that and kept drinking, shouting and slamming doors until 00:30, after that they left to go out to party. I asked them twice to be mindful about the noise, but they didn't care about that. Hanibal was also losing his patience with them, but remained calm and friendly. I would not know how to resolve the issue. It's more due to the Isrealis than the hostel, but it didn't seem the hostel could enforce their own rules. The main problem is that the room (monkey) which is the main dormitory is next to the common area, which might lead to a lot of noise with a big group.

Verified reviewGood vibe! Staff are very friendly and helpful, loads of common areas to hang out and has a pool table. Great free breakfast each morning, also offer reasonable scooter rentals and tours. Plenty of showers and toilets. Free water, straight from a local spring, tasted good!
Kitchen was pretty gross and not super well equipped. Lots of food rotting in the fridge etc. if you’re not cooking not an issue!

Verified reviewGreat vibe, not a party hostel but a more mature one. Good for a relaxed stay in Ometepe.
Cleanliness of the common areas could be better, and there were power outages during the nights, which made the fans go out.
hi Tomer thanks for your feedback we are happy you did enjoy the vibes and the relaxing way in our hostel. about the cleanliness we do our best to keep the common area and everywhere clean but as you know we are on an island and the hostel has open area everywhere so is hard to keep it clean every second time even though the cleaning lady is always there to make sure the hostel looks clean. about the power outages we cant do nothing as when the power cut off it affects the entire island but also we do have a generator and when the powers cut off for so long ,we use to turn it on so at that time you probably did not realized that we had the power back on again even the normal service was not working still safe travels and we hope to see you again someday in the future at out hostel to enjoy the vibes around :) att: the lazy crab team .

Verified reviewTriple private room was spacious and beds were comfy with a big fan per person. Staff were friendly and super helpful with arranging taxis and scooter hire. Free breakfast every morning was really good and 3 options. Good location on side of island away from ferry port but close to main sights. Basic kitchen and bathrooms but expected for the island. Would recommend!
Super basic facilities but is similar for the whole island!

Verified reviewOverall the hostel is nice, has a decent kitchen with fridge and freezer and the dorms have an attached bathroom with toilet and shower.
The mattress seemed really old and was not comfortable; the door of my room (monkey) did not close.

Verified reviewThis place is a one of a kind gem in Ometepe. The food is amazing, the location is perfect (the lake is at the end of the lane if you want a quick dip) and it’s conveniently next to both shops and restaurants. The beautiful art that is characteristic of Lazy Crab is incredible, it made the vibe of the hostel relaxing and it was offset by the fireflies that are visible from the terrace in the evening. The owner was helpful, caring and was happy to share tips for the best places to visit on the Island. I will definitely be returning.

Verified reviewThe staff were friendly and helpful, the facilities were clean and the kitchen had the basic utensils, the free coffee was a great bonus.
My only note is that the price on booking was much lower than how it is set by the staff at lazy crab, and breakfast was not included in that price. Not a complaint as the hostel honoured the price I had booked at, and I told them I could cook my own breakfast- would just recommend double checking with the hostel first.

Verified reviewI have never come across such a dishonest youth hostel. My order includes breakfast, and I paid a total of 13 US dollars. If breakfast is not included, the price of this youth hostel on another booking platform is only 10 US dollars. Last night, I asked the staff about the breakfast time today. The staff told me that it was 8 o'clock in the morning, and then I had to take a bus to the pier. He said that the bus was at 8:30 in the morning. This morning, I was waiting for breakfast in the lobby before 8 o'clock, but there was still no breakfast until 8:20. I asked the staff why I didn't have breakfast, and he replied that breakfast needs to be ordered, and then made, and the fee must be paid. In this way, I didn't have time to eat breakfast, so I took my luggage and left. Later, the store actually cancelled my stay, just because they were afraid that I would write a bad review. Not only is the seller dishonest, but the room is also very unclean. There are ants on the walls of the bathroom and the room. My bag of cookies was full of ants in the plastic bag the next morning, so I had to throw it away.
