How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWe had a wonderful stay at Spring Garden, Kota Kinabalu. 🌿✨ It’s a cozy little house surrounded by a beautiful garden right at the foothills of the amazing Mount Kinabalu. The atmosphere was peaceful, fresh, and very cooling at night — perfect for a restful sleep. The accommodation was very comfortable: • A spacious and comfy queen-sized double bed • A large bathtub with a fully functional water heater • A clean and well-kept bathroom We were especially touched by the thoughtful gestures a small birthday decoration prepared for my son, along with a ‘small’ bouquet of flowers and fresh avocados waiting at our doorstep. 🥑💐 Such warm hospitality made our stay extra special. Another highlight was the chance to do a short hike to enjoy the waterfall from Mount Kinabalu, which made the experience even more memorable. This place is truly suitable for a small family looking for comfort, nature, and a unique stay experience. Highly recommended! 🌸🏡
Our stay at Spring Garden, Kota Kinabalu was a unique experience, but there are some important points to consider before booking. There are no TVs and no air-conditioning in the rooms. While the nights are naturally very cold, some guests might still find the lack of facilities inconvenient. The price is also higher compared to other hotels in the area. Breakfast is not provided on-site. Guests need to go to Benjamin Café outside Spring Garden, which closes at 8pm,a bit inconvenient if you want a later dinner. The biggest challenge for us was the access road. It’s uneven, very dark at night, and quite difficult to find. We arrived at 10pm and actually got lost on the way. Thankfully, Mr. Lee, the caretaker, kindly guided us over the phone until we reached the place safely. For this reason, I would recommend arriving during daylight to enjoy the scenery and avoid getting lost. Although the garden entrance is free and the environment is peaceful, overall the value for money feels less compared to other nearby accommodations.

Verified reviewThe stay was good. The staff were too friendly and helpful. The location was great. The scenery is mindblowing. It was a getaway from all the stress that city life could give, hahaha.
They didn't have tv . This wasn't really an issue, though. If you like nature, then this is the place for you. Kota kinabalu was just at your doorstep. Another thing I would like to highlight is to check on the amenities in the room. Some of the coffee glasses are kind of dirty, but if checked properly, it is fine. It was fine for us because we never used the glasses as we had our coffee in the restaurant nearby, but for those who does please ensure that is clean. That is all, but all other things are cleaned and well taken care of. The manager over there is always catering to the guest. So I will give a thumbs up to this place.

Verified reviewLoved the serene surroundings, room was simply furnished, but met our needs. Overall clean room. Beautiful views when you just step out of the room.
Not a complaint - but would be nice to have a TV in the room!

Verified reviewThe garden and views were fantastic . The little river at the back was a real treat. Mr Lee, the caretaker, helped us carry our luggage from the car to the unit n back. He had photos with information which he conveniently shared with us via WhatsApp.
1. The road into the unit was unpaved and not so easy to drive. 2. The path from the carpark to the unit would have been better if there were lined with gravel. We arrived after the gardener cut the grass and everywhere we walked, we brought the grass around. 3. While the unit was pleasant and a good option to be away from all electronics, I would appreciate giving us the option of have cable TV. 4. WiFi was a bit wonky esp at night. 5. The price per night is a bit steep.

Verified reviewThe room is big with good view, but you need to be cautious and handle the blinds a lot as people outside can see you. The view is really great, you can see mount kinabalu from just outside your room's door. The flowers are pretty too. The view is 5 stars! The river nearby is wonderful, feels like a private river. The water is ice cold from the mountain. Mr Lee is nice and helpful. The gardener and cleaner are also friendly.
The road from H.Benjamin to Spring Garden is bad, too rocky and uneven. It made us think twice to go out of the place. The water heater takes time to reheat, owner needs to change to a bigger capacity of heater tank. Wifi keeps disconnecting. No tv..kids are bored. Ada banyak sawang labah2 di toilet..toilet bowl hijau berlumut! For more than rm1k per night, the room does not worth the price. Maybe they need to reduce the rate to make it worth the experience.

Verified reviewI like the surroundings of the hotel, which is surrounded by flowers and is in accordance to the name 'Garden'. Not only that, you can find a small river which allows you to feel very close to the nature.
I don't really like the infrastructure going there, the road was awful and so bad. Aside from that, the lack of other amenities in the complex is also another downside if you are looking for some other facilities. But that's not a dealbreaker for me :)

Verified reviewAn excellent location to unwind. The surroundings is just spectacular with well maintained beautiful varieties of flowers and garden landscape. With views of Mt Kinabalu can be seen clearly from 6 am to 8 am / 4 pm - 5 pm. There is a small waterfall/river at the back of Spring Garden. Easy 10 mins walk. But pls be careful when you walk towards the grass near the river as the ground is soft. My husband didn’t realize it & had a slipped & was all muddied on jacket & short pants. Although the room rates is high but the view, the quietness, chirping of birds and the beautiful surrounding garden made it worthwhile. If you are looking for nearby breakfast, lunch or dinner, you can visit Tranquera House, serving delicious & reasonable priced Nyonya cuisine, which is only 3 mins drive from Spring Garden. However, you need to call at least 3 - 4 hrs in advance to place orders. Thanks to Mr Lee, the Property Manager for his responsiveness and good customer service.
The distance to walk for the free breakfast @ HJ Benjamin Residence is approx 1 km. Suggest to rent a car for ease of traveling.

Verified reviewThe place was comfortable and clean, with a great view of the mountain. Garden is well maintained, as well as the short trail towards a beautiful river at the back of the garden. Amenities are sufficient, the toilet has heated floor and heated rail for drying clothes. Breakfast is just a few minutes drive away. This place is perfect for switching off to relax, recharge, and offers good privacy. Mr Lee was exceptionally helpful, and goes the extra mile. Thank you, we will be back again.
We don’t have an issue with this, but just be aware that the road from breakfast place to the hotel is very rocky and has no street lights.

Verified reviewThe scenery was fantastic. Staffs (the gardeners) are very kind and friendly.
The room is quite empty for the price. Doesn’t have tv, doesn’t have wifi, no fridge, no microwave, no mini kitchen. Maybe it’s just me, i’ve always prefer a suite instead.

Verified reviewReally nice place with a lot of beautiful flowers.
Very muddy and wet due to constant rain. Come during sunny season. The owner should build better walk way in case the path gets muddy. Nothing much to do apart from enjoying the view. The breakfast is meh as is a set menu of simple breakfast. The room is generally clean but the wardrobe smells old, need to be removed. The shower water hole needs to be cleaned, we found a worm crawling. The location is quite far from kundasang city, around 20-30 mins drive depending on the restaurants you want to go.

Verified reviewWe like the quietness and serenity of the location as well as the very beautifully manicured garden which was quite extensive. The cabin/room we booked was cleaned, spacious for 4 adults, and the toiletries provided were sufficient except for toilet paper and tissue paper which were not enough for 4 pax in a room.
The location is only accessible by car and the breakfast place was about a kilometre away. But the manager of the property was very kind to drive us to and fro each day to the breakfast place. It would have been quite difficult to walk there without that service provided. The breakfast place however could improve on their service level. I think one more chair in the room would also be appreciated.
