How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewExcellent communication and support from the team via what’s app, when booking my 1 night, 2 day River cruise lodge stay via them. I stayed a night pre and post cruise, so kept my big bag in their locked storage room, which was great. Very friendly and helpful staff, my bag got very wet on the bus and the male receptionist, let me lay it all out infront of fans to help to dry it all. Nice Duvet, lockers and dorm and Bathrooms all very clean too. Great location. Quiet and good for resting. I recommend this hostel.

Verified reviewGood location, right above 7/11 and shops/restaurants nearby. Comfortable beds, clean bedding and plump pillows. Good AC. Fridge available in kitchen area which was useful. Plenty of showers/toilets and all were clean.
The washing machine was out of order which was a shame. My room door was difficult to lock and unlock so this was a bit annoying to do every time I need to go to the bathroom or the kitchen.

Verified reviewBasic and simple hostel with all you need. It matches my expectations for such a cheap price. Overall I recommend it because it is well located (in the centre of Sandakan). The staff is kind and available and replied to all my questions.
The cleaning of the bathrooms and the facilities can be slightly improved.

Verified reviewThe hostel is nice and comfortable. Very close to the sea. Walking distance to all harbour restaurants and the sandakan big mall. Owner is very responsive on WhatsApp and helps with all details and requests.
Had many local middle aged men stay at the hostel. They dirtied the toilets and also roamed around shirtless in the common room. Was very uncomfortable. Also, don’t meet many travellers so, not really a hostel vibe.

Verified reviewVery comfortable ĥostel. The rooms were nice and had everything you need; a comfortable bed, bed curtains, a light and power socket beside the bed, AC. The bathroom facilities were also very nice; lots of seperate showers and toilets and enough hanging spaces. The water pressure was nice and there was hot water. The whole hostel was really clean. The common area is fine, but not the most social (although i did meet some nice people!) and also the chairs are not that comfortable. There is a water tap and washing machine/dryer available against payment. Overall a really good hostel.
The common room is not the most cosy space and the chairs are not that comfortable. In the common room there's also not any AC, so it can be a bit hot inside. Still a lovely hostel though!!

Verified reviewReally good stop over hostel, really clean tidy and comfortable beds. Hot coffee and water refills are provided, you can do laundry there and they have a fridge. 7/11 directly underneath. Had a good sleep there! Communication is really effective if you need anything they WhatsApp immediately back
Nothing, great value for money and really happy with the stay.

Verified reviewThe hotel is secure and in a great location close to a couple of good restaurants, the seafront and the mall. There is a 7/11 next door with an ATM. The room was large, bright and clean with a comfortable bed and nice lighting. There were plenty of shared bathrooms and sinks.
Bathrooms were generally OK but require more frequent cleaning, as well as privacy film applied to the windows.

Verified reviewlocation is really central with a 7-eleven and a Zus coffee downstairs.
When we arrived at the property we couldn’t get in, we rang the doorbell but no one seemed to answer. After a long drive there we really wanted to use the bathroom and store our luggage, but no one informed us that there wouldn’t be anyone at the property. We called the number provided but no one picked up. We had already messaged them on booking hours earlier, stating our arrival time but received no reply. We whatsapped and after a little while we got given a code that did not work. we ended up waiting 25minutes before we could finally enter the property with the right code. the place honestly just feels weird with almost no one being there at any time and the shared place just feeling odd and empty. The bedroom stank probably because of the old carpet and the bed creaked when you moved on it. the bathroom leaves loads to be desired especially for the amount of people that use 2 toilets and 2 showers
