How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewEveryone working there is so friendly and makes the stay very special. The tours offered are good quality and employ local guides. The waterside accomodation is so relaxing - a privilege to waste away days with the view of the water and village life. Food was decent.
No hot water for 3 days in a row despite raising the issue mid-trip. Wish they would invest in some more comfortable seating on the balcony and in lounge area.
Thanks for the review, we are glad you liked our place. We opened just 2 years ago and we are always trying to improve our services, rooms and infrastructure. Regarding the hot water, we use solar water heaters, so the availability can vary depending on how sunny the day is. We chose this system both to reduce our environmental impact and to deal with frequent power cuts here in Malawi. This is another thing we recently invested, to have more hot water capacity, we are currently waiting for the new solar water heater to be delivered. Have a nice trip!

The stairs are a bit challenging, but it's part of being at water's edge.
Thanks for the review :)

Verified reviewThe first night there were some problems with the room when we arrived but they were accommodating. . The staff is super friendly, helpful (Ronaldo, Leman, German, Patrick... All of them) The food is good and not expensive. Nice terrace and lounge area. Just by the lake with easy access and across the pier so very convenient if you are taking a ferry /boat. The dorm for 4 people is great. We loved it and came back aftee visiting other places up north.
It was not easy to get hot water but they provided a hot water bucket. Be ready to go up and down some stairs.
Hi! We're really sorry for the inconvenience on the first day. There were other guests who specifically requested a double bed (as they had booked the whole dorm), and we always try our best to make every guest feel as comfortable as possible. Apologies that it took a bit longer than expected to rearrange everything back to the four single beds. Regarding the hot water, we use solar water heaters, so the availability can vary depending on how sunny the day is. We chose this system both to reduce our environmental impact and to deal with frequent power cuts here in Malawi. We're really glad you enjoyed your stay and even came back! Thank you also for your kind words about the staff :) Safe travels!

Verified reviewBeautiful location at the shore of lake Malawi. The 2 cottages built on stilts in the lake are especially beautiful - they seem to float on the water. City Centre and the port with the boats to Likoma Island are in walking distance

Verified reviewThe lodge is located right in front of Lake Malawi, offering a stunning view! Really enjoyed the peaceful sound of the waves, watching the sunrise in the morning, and the stars at night. It’s also within walking distance to the town, which made it easy to explore the local area.
Thanks for the nice review! We are very happy to know that you enjoyed and liked our place and had a nice time in Nkhata Bay :)

Verified reviewI stayed there for two nights. I arrived very late, they arranged transport from Mzuzu and were waiting with warm dinner. The place is located on a hill with an outstanding view of Lake Malawi. The staff are super nice and kind.

Verified reviewIt was a perfect location with a stunning view of the lake at all times. I relaxed while waiting for the sunrise and watching the sunset. The hammock was incredibly comfortable. Also, since it was the off-season, I had the shared dorm all to myself — that was great too! And in the end, they even helped arrange a taxi and bus to Lilongwe. It was an amazing stay!
I don’t really have any complaints, but if I had to mention something — it was a bit hard to get my laundry dry, so it would have been nice to have a spot with more sunlight for drying clothes. But honestly, it was such a great stay that there’s hardly anything to point out!
Thanks for the review :)

The compost toilet took a bit of getting used to and smelt pretty bad pretty quickly
Thanks for the review! We understand that compost toilets can be a different experience. We use them as part of our commitment to being environmentally friendly and to help protect the lake, especially since our double rooms are right by the water. We use natural and organic materials for cleaning and odor control, and the toilets and rooms are cleaned daily (and more often upon request in the private rooms). We're glad you enjoyed your stay and liked our place :)

Verified reviewA visit to the Soul Rebel Lodge in Nkhata Bay was an extraordinary experience. Its location directly on Lake Malawi offers spectacular views of both land and water. In addition to providing fascinating insights into the flora and fauna for Europeans, the easy accessibility of the nearby village also allows for exciting interactions with the locals and their culture and joie de vivre. The food at the Soul Rebel Lodge is phenomenally good; Guax, the chef, served us the best guacamole in the world, made from fresh, local ingredients. Occasional power outages, which in principle only made the trip more exciting, are compensated for by the operator thanks to a solar system. The water supply was impeccable, but you shouldn't drink the lake water. However, there is a sufficient selection and availability at the lodge bar. All of the staff, without exception, did a fantastic job and made our stay as enjoyable as possible. Great tours are also offered directly on site, which took us out onto the lake and into the surrounding area. The Soul Rebel Lodge is also an excellent base for longer excursions. We enjoyed our stay here and would love to come back.
We noticed a few shortcomings during our visit: The stairs on the grounds are very steep and difficult for people with walking difficulties. However, if you take a break here and there, you can enjoy the magnificent view or have the opportunity to observe the colorful lizards and birds scurrying among the fruit trees on the grounds. Those who have problems with small animals and insects will be pleased to know that mosquito nets are provided for the night. Occasionally, certain dishes on the menu were unavailable; however, the menu is so extensive that we always found a great alternative. The biggest drawback of our trip, however, was that it ended after such short time.
Thanks for the great review and your nice words, we are happy to know you liked our place and enjoyed, you are more than welcome anytime :)

Verified reviewBest choice in Nkhata Bay. Great views, lakeside and dorm beds are huge and well designed. Close to town for cheap restaurants and supermarkets.
Rounding up of the Booking price, 1% tax added and an unfavourable exchange rate added $1.10usd per night to the cost. Not terrible but makes a difference. If a basic free breakfast (Omelette and Toast and buy your tea and coffee) was added the place would be ideal.
Sorry about the 1%, that is tourism levy that has to be paid to the government (in your case was $0.11 per night), and the dollar/kwacha rate we use is our bank rate, currency exchange rates can be confusing in Malawi because of the forex problem the country has. We appreciate your kind comments about the beds and views, and we’re glad you enjoyed the location and proximity to restaurants and supermarkets. We’ve also taken note of your suggestion for adding breakfast, and we’ll definitely consider it to enhance our guests' experience. Thanks for the review!
