How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe boys at the hostel, even though they barely spoke English, were very nice and tried to understand my broken French. It was also located very close to the medina. A person cleaned the bathrooms every morning.
The beds were really uncomfortable, like 4/10, just bearable for a few nights but I kind of dreaded lying down. The rooftop had a great view but there were no couches or anything, just plastic chairs without pillows. A few couches would have made it SO much better. The toilets, although cleaned every day, smelled bad and the shower only occasionally had warm water. There were no places to hang out except for the badly equipped rooftop. The lights on the rooftop didn't work and neither did the ceiling light in our room.
Hi Anna-Maria, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We really appreciate your honesty—it helps us a lot to understand what worked for you and what clearly needs improvement. We’re glad to hear you found our team friendly and that the location near the medina was convenient. It also means a lot to know that, even with the language barrier, our team did their best to connect with you—that’s the spirit we always hope to share with our guests. That said, we’re truly sorry to hear about the discomfort with the beds, the rooftop setup, and the lighting issues. You’re right—those plastic chairs aren’t ideal, and adding couches is something we’ve actually been considering. Feedback like yours helps us move in the right direction. We’ll also make sure the maintenance and cleaning teams are aware of the issues with the lights, toilets, and showers. Thank you again for being both honest and fair in your comments. We hope we’ll get the chance to welcome you back with improvements that truly make a difference. Warm regards, The team at the hostel

Verified reviewThe room was spacious and the view was beautiful. And they did a good in maintaining cleanliness in the hostel.
I was on the 1st but had to either shower on the ground floor or 2nd floor because there was no shower on the 1st floor. They did a good job keeping the restroom clean but there was a stench smell from the pipe/drainage.
Hi, Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We're happy to hear that you appreciated the spacious room, the beautiful view, and the cleanliness of our hostel. Verified reviewStaff is friendly and willing to help inspite of our language barrier.
They state there to be a shared kitchen. There isn't.
Thank you for your feedback! We're very happy to hear that you found our staff friendly and helpful — we always do our best to assist all our guests, regardless of language differences. We’re sorry for the confusion regarding the kitchen. While we do have some shared facilities, we understand this may not have met your expectations and we’ll make sure our listings are clearer moving forward. We appreciate your input and hope to welcome you again.

Verified reviewI don’t understand why this hostel has such low rating. It’s perfectly located 5 mins from main square but also from mountain 🏔️. The guys working there don’t speak much other than Arabic but they are so nice and friendly. And the most important ! You can pay with card!!!!!
The bathroom has a big windows always opened - it’s cold at night.
Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review! We're really glad you enjoyed the location — being close to both the main square and the mountains is something many of our guests appreciate. We're especially happy to hear that you felt welcomed by our team, even with the language differences. And yes — being able to pay by card is a convenience we’re proud to offer! Thank you also for pointing out the open bathroom window — we’ll look into how we can make it more comfortable, especially during the colder nights. We truly appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you again soon!

Verified reviewStaying in La Joya was a really nice expriences which also helped us get into the local culture, it's pretty centric located and it has facilities, there was no breakfast included and the staff was pretty attentive even though they didn't understand french to the perfection but we managed to communicate. I would stay again and recommend La Joya for travellers like us in Chefchaouen.
There was a waiting time at the begigging due to an unexespected error on the booking bit they were eager to solve it.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience at La Joya! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay and felt a connection with the local culture — that's exactly what we hope our guests take away from their time here. We're also glad the location and facilities met your needs, and that our staff made you feel welcome, even with the language differences. We apologize again for the initial booking issue and truly appreciate your patience while we worked to resolve it. Your kind words and recommendation mean a lot to us, and we would love to welcome you back anytime you're in Chefchaouen!
