How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe lady who checked us in and cooked dinner/breakfast was lovely (she had very little english). The mosquito nets over the bed were in good condition and worked well.
The owner overcharged us and tried to rip us off! When we arrived at the property we requested to reduce our length of stay from 3 nights to 2 through the booking.com app (within free cancellation period). The owner said that we could reduce to 2 but needed to change it through the app and refused to accept the change in the app on his end. He even asked us to cancel the entire booking (and pay) then re book for 2 nights and pay again! when we said this was effectivly charging for 5 nights he laughed and said exactly! when we checked out we just accepted that we would have to pay for the 3 nights, however, 1 hour after we left he accepted the change to 2 nights in the app and the price updated to 2 nights. when I messaged him about this he said we could come back and collect the difference (we were already 4 hours away on a train which he knew). usually I would accept this charge as its a family run place but we even offered to cover the booking.com charges for the third night and he was just so obviously taking advantage and ripping us off. Do not book the safari through his company it was the most expencive one we saw, we booked down the road at budget holiday planning for 1/4 of the price and it ended up being one of his jeeps anyway. Dinner was the most expencive curry and rice we have had in Sri Lanka. The owner took us to his friend to hire bikes and then one broke while we were 20 minutes from the property and when we called the owner he refused to provide help. The owner said he had bad english but we think that this was only when it suited him to say he couldnt understand us. The room and beds smelt so bad of mould, even after we left the smell stuck to all our belongings, also no mosquito nets over the window in the bathroom so lots of mosquitos.
Hello, I want to clarify this, the truth is that this couple had booked the room for 3 days only a few months ago. However, after their arrival, they asked me that 3 days were unnecessary for them and to charge for only two days. But I told them that I can't do that and if you want to cancel your previous booking through booking.com and make a new booking for 2 days, otherwise I told them that booking.com will charge me rent for 3 days. But they did not listen and argued with me. I just want to say that they are the worst narrow minded tourists that have come to my accommodation in so long (about 15 years). According to my understanding, by writing such a bad review, they meant to take revenge on me...

A bit farther from many of the restaurants but it’s still a pretty easy walk. Also the food served at Mango Villa was better than any of the restaurants I tried anyway!

Everything was perfect, just is better not to walk alone by night time to the centre because of the wild animals but the family will help you by tuk tuk.

Verified reviewWe loved our high ceiling room, everything works. I loved the fact that for a budget place, the lovely owners provide a kettle, coffee and a hair dryer. Breakfast was plentiful.
The owner told us that we had to beware of wild elephants if walking back from the village after about 8pm. Mango Villa is out of town (albeit in beautiful countryside) and near a river where they can come to drink. We would have liked to stay out later as there are many restaurants and bars in Sigyria to enjoy.

Verified reviewThe location is fantastic. Near the sigiriya rock (10 minutes with tuk tuk). The host and his family are really friendly. His wife provides every morning so delicious breakfast. We arrived on the road too late (3 a.m). My wife was afraid, but when we called the host he provided a tuk tuk for us in 15 minutes. He really helped us that night. Also, he gave us two bicycles for free one evening to go around the lake where is too near to location. I really recommend this place to every one who follows clean and cheap price.

Verified reviewThe room had everything you needed, even AC. It was nice having a little patio in front of the room. The accommodation was in walking distance to a little lake where you could watch the sunset but at the same time you could reach some restaurants and bars within 15-20 min by foot. The host was really nice as well, he tried to make our stay as comfortable as possible by organizing trips such as a safari or driving us in the morning to the pidurangala rock to see the sunrise. The breakfast was on one day traditional on the other day western style, so a good mix of both. There’s also the possibility to have a really nice dinner for some extra charge.
The wifi doesn’t work inside the rooms.
Thank you very much.
