Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomIt rained a lot so we probably didn’t get the best experience.
We stayed in the tree house. Amazing view over the river. Best Sri Lankan breakfasts all home cooked. Not in centre of Tissa so not many tourists. But that made it all the better.

Czech RepublicThe shower was…. Well. The doors didnt work, but since I had my own room, it was alright.
I got upgraded to a single room for the same amount of money (i booked a shared dorm). The place is really cosy and the owners are super nice. Plus, the dinner!!!! The curry was the best I have had on Sri Lanka so far. The owner arranged a sarafi tour for me, which was super nice.

United KingdomGreat little place to stay! Was in dormitory, but I was the only one at the time. Very comfortable and the views from the rooms are incredible! Going to sleep with sounds of the insects and frogs! Staff are amazing and very helpful/knowledgeable. Food is really good and a good area to be in, nice and quiet!

So as you can see, it is a more adventurous stay than average - but in proportion everything is really clean, a lot more than other more ‘luxurious’ stays we had. There is noice in the evening but if with ear plugs I slept really good. The owner is super cute and friendly and arranges everything how you like it. Because it was off season, he hadn’t arranged wifi yet, but we didn’t mind! + he has really cute dogs and arranged a safari for us with an amazing guide

United KingdomNo social vibe at all - I was the only person there! Bugs are absolutely everywhere, and the facilities are very basic. It wasn't clear where I could fill up my water bottle. I was happy to move on after two nights.
It was a pretty affordable stay and they arrange a good safari, even if it may be more expensive than you might expect (just how it is these days). The setting was serene. The owner also dropped me off at the bus stop which was nice.

NetherlandsIt can get quite hot in the rooms, even with a fan. That off course is to be expected in all of sri lanka. So that is not on the host :)
Lovely people that will help you with wathever you need. I just had a short stay, but they were nice. And the place is beautiful.. Would definitely recommend staying here. If you want a special place, book the treehouse..

OmanThese are our personal experiences, so won’t happen to everyone but I’m sharing in the interest of reviewing honestly. 1. We booked the “deluxe treehouse” a few months in advance. When we checked in, there seemed to be an issue with our booking and it transpired that two girls had already checked in to that particular treehouse earlier that day after booking on another third party website. The staff then moved the girls’ backpacks which were already in the treehouse to allow us to stay there as per our booking. Whilst we were happy that our booking was being honoured, we felt uncomfortable that the girls’ things had been moved (and the safe contained their belongings so we couldn’t use it) and that they’d return from the safari to someone else in their room! We didn’t want the awkwardness or the confrontation so we voluntarily moved to another treehouse - it was a downgrade but we actually enjoyed the views of the river. The treehouse we moved to was cheaper so we paid less and the owner gave a discount of $5 off the price. Perhaps, there should have been more compensation as we saved them a lot of hassle and expense by voluntarily moving before the girls returned. 2. Granted, this is authentic tree house living in the jungle so of course the outside is the inside and as such, things like many cobwebs and insects in the room is unavoidable and didn’t bother us. However, beyond this nature, the riverside treehouse we stayed in was dirty. A dirty shower, sink and toilet. No toilet paper or soap provided. I would have expected a better level of cleanliness for the price as it’s not dirt cheap and these are basics. 3. We booked a safari through the property. Whilst this isn’t directly related to the accommodation, I’m noting our experience here so people can keep it in mind when planning their trip. Months in advance, I booked the half day safari. When we arrived, the owner convinced us to book the full day which we were happily persuaded to do in the end.
The family were kindhearted and friendly and they have cute dogs, especially the new Labrador puppy (but we do hope he isn’t being overfed). The treehouses are genuinely very authentic so it’s a really cool experience to stay there and experience nature! The whole camp is situated on a river which also offers some good wildlife watching opportunities. The Sri Lankan curry meal we enjoyed (at a small additional cost) was home made and was one of the best meals we’ve had in Sri Lanka!

GermanyTruly a unique hostel! Waking up to the sounds of nature right outside your door is really an experience, and we even got to see crocodiles floating down the river while sitting and eating our delicious breakfast. The host was extremely nice and helpful and it felt like he really cared about our experience. We arranged the safari tour with him as well as our transport to Ella, and everything was super easy, well-organized and for a fair price.

ChileIt has a unique view to the lake, its a tree house so you are really in the jungle and it is so beautiful. We could see monkeys jumping around. The owner and their family are the nicest people ever! He took us for a little tour to see the lake free of charge, and also picked up us for a restaurant a little bit far from the hostel free of charge too. There were a lot of insects and spiders but that comes with sleeping in the jungle so its okay. A great experience.

Germanyit is in the middle of the nature, so it's not a big surprise, but those tiny ants make it thru the mosquito net, which gave us some sleepless hours at the beginning. repellent helped :-)
we had an incredible experience! stayed for 3 nights, and saw heaps of animals high up in the tree: paradise bird, palm squirrel, monkeys, a mantis, peacock. down in the river there was a huge crocodile, but they don't climb the hill up to the property, so it feels safe. also the treehouse is a very solid construction.bath room is on ground level. they serve fantastic curry and kotthu!! Demu, the host, took us for little tours (little charges apply), to see spectacular bat migrating from big trees at the lake, and also to the dunes, which was very beautiful. he can help with arranging safari tour (half day for 54$ which we totally recommend) all of the family were very friendly and helpful no matter what needs we had. thank you!!
