How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe resort itself is as the pictures misrepresentative portray. The grounds and pool were nice. We booked this resort for a once-in-a-lifetime trip with our children and grandchildren for our 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Unfortunately, our stay here was very unpleasant, and I cannot recommend it. Firstly, the resort felt very unsafe to us due to its location. It is in the middle of a slum area. "The resort claims Watamu Bay Beach has a bar and free wifi." No. The bar/lounge had extremely limited options. Requested mixed drinks were unavailable because the stock of alcohol was almost non-existent and a bottle of white wine was our only option. The staff was very apologetic. No wifi was available in the rooms. "The property provides room service, a tour desk, and currency exchange for guests." No. Room service was not an option as the restaurant was closed. We were escorted to one of the two restaurants that were in the slum, down the road. There was no reception or tour desk, only one gentleman in a shack. "Breakfast is available, and includes à la carte, Full English/Irish and Italian options." No. The breakfast which was located in the bar/lounge was also limited with few options. Again, the staff was apologetic. "A few steps from Mapango Beach and a 1-minute walk from Watamu Bay Beach." No. Beach access was only through the slum. - The rooms, at first glance, looked clean as in the pictures but were stained, chipped, and rusted. Our 12 family members in 3 rooms wouldn't take a shower. - The view we had behind our rooms and from the stairwell was of a slum. - At 4 AM, the very LOUD Muslim call to prayer started and repeated five times until 5 AM. This was disruptive to our sleep and not the way we wanted to start our vacation day. -We checked out after our first night and requested a refund due to the above issues. There was no reception to check in or out. There was a shack with a gentleman with limited English. He said, "Okay, okay." Of course, we did not receive a refund. Contacting the resort through Booking.com and Booking.com customer service was not helpful.

Verified reviewThe breakfast was great! I really recommend booking with breakfast. The staff is super friendly as well as the owner that's always around and worried about your needs. It's super close to the beach, and the pool inside the hotel is great. Food and drinks at the hotel are also great :)

Verified reviewIt's a very clean and safe accommodation with great access to the beach and bay.
The staff is very friendly and helpful (especially the cleaning lady), though I must say I get a bit annoyed/uncomfortable when the receptionists take my phone number from my contact information and text me privately. That's crossing a line, being too unprofessional and making me feel a bit uncomfortable.

Verified reviewWe enjoyed our trip and stay in Ascot. The staff were friendly, and we loved the restaurant, which mostly serves delicious Italian food. We also enjoyed a free massage and found the beach area to be amazing. Overall, it’s a very safe place, and the people in the area are very friendly.
There is only one receptionist whose accent is disrespectful. However, he does not do this intentionally. The management needs to provide him with training, and then he will improve.

Verified reviewThe staff was very friendly, the breakfast and pizzas were excellent. The massage was fantastic 🙏🏻.
It’s near a Mosque, which is not a problem as everyone needs to respect their religion but the praying started at 4 - 5 in the morning and continued. Absolutely horrible was the discotheque driving me completely insane till 3 am in the morning. The facilities could use an update.

Dear Philip, Thank you for highlighting the kindness of our staff. We’re surprised by your low score, especially for location, comfort, and services. Our central position is ideal, just a short walk from two stunning beaches. We provide high-quality mattresses, cozy seating areas, and lush garden patios. Additionally, our services include two pools, a restaurant, bar, casino, spa treatments, and options for excursions, safaris, and airport transfers—all at a very competitive price. We hope to welcome you again for a better experience. Best regards, Ascot Watamu

Verified reviewBreakfast was okay however very slow service. Additionally, the everyday breakfast itself was very basic—a standard Italian-style spread. Being a hotel in Kenya, they could have incorporated at least a few Kenyan dishes such as chapatis to reflect the local culture and cater to diverse tastes.
- If you’re looking for a relaxing and enjoyable stay, I would strongly recommend steering clear of the Ascot Hotel. For the price we paid, the experience was absolutely not worth it. - Staying at the Ascot Hotel was a deeply frustrating experience. From the moment we arrived, issues kept piling up. On our first night, we had to request a room change due to the relentless noise from three massive generators right next to our room. Initially, the reception staff refused to accommodate us, even though there were clearly plenty of empty rooms available. After much back and forth, we were finally moved. However, they failed to update their system with our new room, which meant no housekeeping, water, or basic room services unless we explicitly asked for them. - Being a country that is too hot, the least they could do is provide small complimentary bottles of water In the room. They had to sell the water for us which was 100 times expensive as compared to the shops nearby. - Very very bad customer service. - Loud nearby nightclub that plays music until 5 am DAILY (mon-Sun) In general, the overall atmosphere around the hotel was chaotic. Between loud Italian neighbors on their phone; a nearby nightclub blasting music until 5 a.m., and the daily early morning prayers through loudspeakers from the local Imam, peace and quiet were impossible to find.
Good morning, we are sorry to read your words. Ascot is a landmark for years in the center Watamu, in safety and environment totally renovated. As for the change of room we are sorry for the inconvenience, although it is a room always occupied by several guests who have never complained. As for cleaning, our housekeeping staff work on all the rooms even if they are not occupied to make them always ready even for last minute, so it seems really impossible that only she was not cleaned. As for water, there are a minibar available at a fee like other hotels, it is not written anywhere that you had this free service. Breakfast , probably a little slower, because we prepare it at the moment nothing is heated and left to the flies on the trolleys, so time is in exchange for quality and freshness, moreover you are on vacation and not in the daily work routine. Also last thing the cuisine of a hotel like ours is international and therefore with English breakfasts and Italian coffee, Kenyan dishes are not part of the menu. As for the runore, our structure is located in the town center, synonymous with security and services nearby, well described in booking, in case in your return to Watamu you will look for decentralized and less comfortable facilities. Thank you

Dear Marjan, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. Regarding our location, it is clearly stated during booking that our property is not oceanfront, and detailed photos of our hotel and rooms are provided to ensure transparency. We are situated in the town center, which offers great convenience for shopping, visiting supermarkets, enjoying nightlife, and dining at nearby restaurants. Additionally, we are just 200 meters from the two most beautiful beaches in Watamu, making it easy to access all major points of interest. We are also proud of our well-maintained garden, which is highly appreciated by most of our guests for its relaxing atmosphere. As for breakfast, we prepare everything fresh, which may take slightly longer, but we strive to ensure quality. We apologize if this did not align with your expectations. We hope that in the future, you might reconsider and experience the true value that so many of our guests enjoy. Best regards, Ascot Watamu
