Perfect setting. Excellent accommodation. Amazing host Aldo...he has been fantastic, helping us when I broke my arm One of life's incredibly kind , generous people. We cannot thank him enough.

We loved everything.

went to Italy with my dad and sister, we stayed for 2 nights and the place was incredible.

Great location. The couple that host were amazing and helped us so much between transportation to and from the bus and we also lost a bag on yhe bus and he was able to retrieve it. That had a great breakfast each morning as well

Typically house that was comfortable. We were here during a heat wave so a fan would be nice for the upper beds. I imagine if it’s wasn’t 100 degrees it would be fine though

It was an even more amazing experience than I expected. I can’t fully express how wonderful it was. You absolutely have to stay here—don’t miss it!

Aldo and Rosa were the most lovely hosts. Nothing was too much trouble and they went above and beyond in very way. So rare to get to know the owners of properties these days. Also even picked us up from and dropped us to the bus station. The room was fabulous - a great shower, lovely personal layout with small details. An honesty fridge with beer and soft drinks was the icing in the cake. Breakfast was delicious and we were encouraged to take anything we hadn't eaten for lunch.

Exceptional location in the heart of Sassi di Matera, our host Aldo and Rosa welcomed us as one of the family. Language barriers aside, they personally greeted us in Matera, provided transportation into historic Sassi to our accommodation - a wonderfully maintained apartment with all the furnishings of home, immaculately maintained. The breakfast spreads are incredible, and feature homemade breads and tarts. What's more, they always insisted we take away treats for later in the day. By far our 3 day stay in Matera was the highlight of our 2.5 week visit to Italy.

Great breakfast and the very very very nice host. He pick us up from the outside because the hotel locate in the ZTL zone. If you can speak Italian, I believe Aldo will share more stories about the city. The room just below the Basilica Cattedrale di Matera, so it's easy go up there and take a great night view of Matera.

This place was unforgettable. Perfect location in the heart of the old Sassi. The 2 hosts were amazing and couldn't do enough or feed us enough! The room was huge, very comfortable, and has everything you needed. The balcony was the best part! If you're looking for a unique stay that you will remember forever, this is it!

I booked Sax Barisano for my parents (70+), and they were absolutely delighted. They met with incredible kindness and generosity, the accommodation itself is wonderful and authentic, in the very heart of Matera. Thank you so much for everything!

The apartment is not modern but Instead was homely, full of character and clean. It has wonderful view of Sassi and from balcony can see the goings on the street. The location was perfect to walk to different sights without negotiating lots of steps if that is preferred. Our hosts Aldo and Rosa made our stay super special. There was so much offered at breakfasts served in cave including different types of cheeses which we got to learn about from Aldo. Rosa bake tart was a delight. They can pick you up from bus/train station and Aldo was so kind to wait with us at the bus station. Sax Barisano would be one of top accomodation I have stayed at due to hospitality of the hosts.

There was nothing I did not like.

Sax Barisano is well placed to explore the beautiful city of Matera , our room was unique and full of character with a lovely balcony overlooking the Sassi , well kept flowerpots adorned the walls . Aldo and Rosa were wonderful hosts and they made our stay extra special. They provided a tasty breakfast and great company- couldn’t do enough for you .

Aldo and Rosa are very warm and helpful hosts. Upon arrival we were breathtaken by the view and the location: a place for ever in our hearts.

Aldo and Rosa were absolutely wonderful. Breakfast was delightful. Aldo picked us up from the bus and brought us back to our darling apartment. He also took us back to get the bus to Bari. We loved it!

Great location. Every facility needed. Lots of bottles of water in fridge. Very comfortable and clean. Super breakfast and Aldo and Rosa were fantastic hosts. Prepared great breakfasts, shared stories and advised on touring Matera. A truly wonderful stay

Everything was perfect!

The proprietors Aldo and Rosa are incomparable! Aldo jumped at any chance to provide impromptu transportation, tours, history lessons, etc. Ferried us to and from our car parked outside of the Sassi. Rosa provided massive Italian breakfasts with homemade tortas, frittatas, local cheeses/meats, fruits, juices and jams. The renovated cava-based apartments were efficiently equipped with modern updates. Remarkably located right in the heart of Sasso Barisano The Sassi of Matera are amazing. Stunning views at every overlook. Great 'historical living' museum next to apartment. We left Matera with a solid understanding of its rich historic and cultural importance especially thanks to Aldo's attentions We WILL be back!

As first time visitors to Matera and its cavas, in hindsight, problems are simply characteristics of the cava-experience; steep stairwells, tiny kitchens, small spaces, tiny doors, rough pathways, etc. Just want to inform future visitors to temper expectations accordingly. Low-level illumination would be nice for the steep bedroom stairwells, given that the bathrooms are on the ground floor.

Breakfast was excellent, location directly in the city center. Aldo and Rosa are both great hosts, thanks for having us :)

Interiors are quite dated

We had a fantastic time in Matera at Sax Barisano suite. Centrally located in the Sassi, clean, comfortable and with an amazing breakfast each morning! Grazie mille Aldo and Rosa for the hospitality, we felt loved and taken care of, like they were our grandparents! We hope to return!

The hosts Aldo and Rosa were incredibly generous. We had a beautiful time. Aldo came to pick us up from where we dropped our car, and then took us back the next day. He was a true gentleman. Staying with them felt like staying at a home.

The best experience ever. Albi and Rosa were extremely helpful and warm hearted.

Aldo went above and beyond! The apartment was perfect! The breakfast that he and his wife, Rosa prepared was amazing! The location was fantastic! I have already recommended Sax Barisano to my fiends and cannot wait to return! Thank you Aldo and Rosa and Happy 50th anniversary!
