How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewFriendly welcome, comfortable rooms with a good en-suite. Spacious lounge and very well equipped kitchen with everything you need to cook a meal (including sharp knives which isn’t always the case). Decent breakfast (bread, cheese, eggs, coffee, cereal and skyr). Property has good soundproofing which is appreciated for anyone wanting to sleep in. The lady who checked us in/welcomed us was very helpful with tips on what to see and do.
Nothing

Verified reviewThe house was excellent. It is located in a private area in a lava field and is surrounded by low trees. It has a large common living room with an open kitchen. The living room had large glass openings and we could see the trees. It also has a very large balcony with a table and chairs to enjoy nature. The entire house is surrounded by a he living room had large glass openings single balcony with tables and chairs per room. The kitchen was fully equipped and had everything we needed to make a full breakfast (eggs, oil, butter, jams, milk, etc.) The room was clean and comfortable. The host was cheerful and gave us information about the area. Lake Myvatn, the baths and the other attractions are very beautiful and worth the stay. Unfortunately when we went the Grjotagia cave was closed, but we were compensated by the other attractions.

Verified review11/10! host joanna was really excellent, she made sure that we were settled in and showed great hospitality! she had great recommendations on where to go, and also topped up the breakfast goodies for us when it was running low. the guesthouse also was really amazing - just 4 rooms and a huge living area and a very well stocked kitchen. all the kitchenware and appliances were high quality and super easy to use, and we really cooked up a feast every night because it really had everything you need! (including soy sauce for us Asians!) of the 3 nights we stayed here, we had a whole day of snow and so we just stayed in and watched tv (we really needed the downtime), and saw aurora right from the balcony one of those nights. the rooms a bit small but overall still comfortable and nice, and considering we largely hung out at the common area this really wasn't any issue. birkilauf was HANDS DOWN our #1 accoms in iceland and i will be recommending all my friends to stay here!
nothing, really! it was such an amazing place and i would very much love to return, if i ever visit iceland again.

Verified reviewNice place, with a nice breakfast and a kitchen that has everything you need. You can also use the washing machine without extra charge. Beds are big and comfortabel, and it has a rain shower! We slept really good and the location is perfect nearby all the sightseeing activities. Someone comes every morning to check if everything is OK, wat was really sweet.
You don’t know when other guests will be checking in, for example, in our case at 23:00. We were already in bed and heard the noise, which was a little bit weird as you don’t expect it so late.

Verified reviewHad an awesome stay! The host was super friendly and gave us some great tips for things to do in the area. The kitchen had everything we needed, which was really handy. Just bring your dinner/lunch and cook as if you are at home cause you will have plenty of pots/pans/oil/salt. Our room was clean and modern. We even got to see the Northern Lights in April!

Verified reviewThere are 4 spacious bedrooms each with its own attached bathroom in a nicely decorated house with shared living room, dining area, well-equipped kitchen and clothes washer cum dryer. Host provides items like juices, yoghurt, butter, jams, cheese, bread, eggs that we use to prepare our own breakfast. Kitchen has necessary cooking utensils, cooking oil, spices & condiments. Patio area has lovely sunset views. Friendly housekeeper met us at checkin & gave detailed explanation of how to operate kitchen appliances. She also recommended nice farmhouse restaurant nearby for meals.
Nothing, house was fabulous.
