How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewWe stayed at Valentia View for two nights, choosing this guesthouse based on the excellent reviews. The house itself looks very beautiful, and the location is quiet and peaceful. Our room was clean, spacious, and everything was functional. The atmosphere is calm, which is great for relaxing.
It is important to note that the outdoor area is private and not accessible to guests — there are “Privat” signs everywhere. The entrance for guests is from the back of the house, next to the bins for waste sorting, which is not the most welcoming first impression. The room, although clean, felt quite minimal and lacked personal touches that would make the stay more cozy. We only saw the host at check-in in the evening; after that, we didn’t see anyone. During check-out, there was no one around, and we weren’t sure where to leave the key. Later, the host called us by phone to clarify, but unfortunately, due to roaming, we had additional costs for the call. A bit more personal contact and clearer instructions would make the stay more comfortable.
Thank you for your review. We’re happy you enjoyed the peaceful location, cleanliness and relaxing atmosphere of our home. However, we would like to clarify a few points for future guests. This is not a traditional guesthouse or hotel, it is our private home where we host guests in a separate part of the house. Check-in is clearly listed as between 16:00 and 20:00. In your case, you informed us around 6 PM that you would arrive at 9 PM. However, you arrived around 10 PM, well beyond the check-in time, without any notice, and you did not respond to our messages or calls. We waited for you, although technically we could have locked the door and declined your stay, as this was against our property policy. Unfortunately, we received no acknowledgment for this extra effort. Regarding the outdoor areas: we have two “Privat” signs to clearly mark our personal spaces. Hardly “everywhere.” Guest seating areas are provided, easily accessible and you passed them several times during your stay. We simply separate spaces for privacy, which we also expect guests to respect. Of course, when time allows and we meet guests in the garden, we’re always happy to chat. However, after you left the house on Sunday while I was at work, you returned very late, after 11 PM. Were we expected to wait up for you to chat at that hour? As for the room, the photos and description on the booking site clearly show what guests can expect. If a more personalised or decorative room is preferred, we recommend reviewing the listing carefully before booking, as everything is transparently presented. Lastly, we sent check-out instructions through the Booking.com app on the morning of your departure, which you seemed to have missed! That’s why we called to assist you. Please also note that offering highly personal, hands-on service throughout an entire stay would require significantly higher rates, something we intentionally avoid to keep our accommodation affordable and accessible for independent travelers.

Verified reviewWe spent 2 nights there. Large, well kept room with large bath. Beds extremely comfortable. Great location for our trip to the Skelligs. Great view of and easy access to Valentia Island. Had good meals in Pormagee and Knightstown.
The host warmly greeted us but didn't fully orient us to the room. There was pot for tea and teas in a small side room which we found after he left. We expected breakfast to be included (from a review we read) but he told us they stopped doing breakfasts because guests were too particular and hard to please. He wasn't clear on places for breakfast in the area. There was a lovely view but no chairs outside from which to sit and enjoy the view. We stayed 2 nights and had no further interaction with the host after our arrival.
