How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewRizza was great, so inclusive and made sure everyone was having a great time. It has such a close knit, community feel with family dinners every night and the food is 👌👌👌! They always have something fun planned every night, great place for solo travellers!
Gemma was unnecessarily rude

Verified reviewThe staff were friendly, the beds comfy, the kitchen had all utensils you need, free towel too, they had “family dinners” where staff took turns to make yummy dinners for travellers, these meals were not expensive and a fun way to meet other travellers - they organised nights out which seemed fun but seemed totally centred around alcohol. The beds were comfy and sheets and towels clean.
Whilst the the bathroom was cleaned everyday and dorm floors were swept every day, the kitchen was ok to cook in, but not super clean - the fridge was filthy and overall the place was not that clean or tidy, the place in general was really messy and needs a good clean up,. l witnessed a horrible thing - staff were drinking in the morning say around 8am - that’s ok but they were really noisy, and what horrified me was that two of the guys, one of them a staff member, who was drunk found some ladies underwear and were sniffing them and making comments about the underwear - it was not a great thing to see. I also heard that a guest fell asleep naked in the common area.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We appreciate your comments, and we're very sorry to hear about your experience. While we're glad you found the bathrooms and dorm floors to be cleaned daily, we're disappointed to hear that the kitchen and general cleanliness did not meet your expectations. We take hygiene seriously and are reviewing our cleaning protocols to ensure all shared spaces — especially the kitchen and fridges — are better maintained moving forward. The behavior you described from staff and other guests is completely unacceptable and deeply concerning. We want to be very clear: we have a strict code of conduct in place, and what you witnessed goes against everything we expect from our team and guests. We are investigating this situation immediately, and appropriate action will be taken to ensure a safe and respectful environment for everyone. We sincerely apologize for the discomfort and distress caused during your stay. If you're open to it, we'd appreciate the opportunity to speak further and get more details. Please feel free to contact us directly. Thanks

Verified reviewGreat place to stay. The staff and the other guests were a pleasure to hang out with.
Cancelling the family dinner on nights when guests pay over 80 euros per night is a bit unnecessary.

Verified reviewGreat place to meet people and to explore Budapest nightlife. Truly a home away from home. See you soon!
The entrance and the staircase leading up to the hostel need to be much cleaner, but inside the hostel it's great.

Verified reviewThis is a really great hostel to stay at. It’s only small so it has a great atmosphere and vibe. The staff and volunteers were all really lovely and were happy to help with whatever. It was really clean and in a great location, a close walk to restaurants and the public transport. I would definitely stay here again. :)

Verified reviewEasily the highlight of my Europe tour, I booked 3 nights but ended up staying for 7 nights. The staff was friendly and always ready to help. I felt so much at home. Thanks a lot to Fantabulous Fables, Reza, Gabor, Liisa and Gemma. I will definitely be back again soon
The shower broke at some point but it was not the hostel's fault (iykyk hahaha)

Verified reviewWe loved our whole stay, especially the Carpe-Staff❤️ We’re three 18 year old girls and the staff did everything to make us feel comfortable, safe and welcome. The atmosphere was very familiar, the staff and other guests were like a family to us. We would definitely recommend to go partying with the hostel since they offer a variety of activities. There was really a laid-back vibe and cute furnishing. And if you get to meet Rza you’re definitely up for a great time!
Some items looked used and it was a bit a bit rancid

Verified reviewCarpe Noctem is the place you go to make friends and have a good time in Budapest. Right off the bat, I was welcomed into the hostel with a smile. People are always out in the common areas talking to each other and anyone's welcome to join in on the fun. There are events hosted every night of the week with pub trivia, boat parties, and bowling nights to name just a few. The staff here are also incredible. Shoutout to Fables for being so welcoming and always being around for a good chat. This is the kind of place where staff actively want to hang out and talk with you above and beyond their other duties. If you're looking for a chill place to meet new folks and then go wild at night, this is the place for you.

Verified reviewHad an absolutely awesome time! Carpe Noctem has an amazing community of staff and guests that make you feel at home from the moment you walk in. The staff really care that you have a great time in Budapest and go above and beyond to make sure you feel at home. Loved the small size of the hostel, you really get to know everyone that's staying here very well, and the hostel attracts the right kind of guests; everyone wanted to have fun, see Budapest, and was very relaxed, genuine and open. The hostel has a comfortable lounge area and convenient facilities that are always kept clean. The location is very central and convenient. Really appreciated the modern air conditioning through the few fairly warm days/nights I stayed here over. Loved Budapest and Carpe Noctem. Many guests come back to this place time and time again and I can really understand why! I'll definitely be staying at Carpe Noctem again.

Verified reviewBest social hostel to stay at in Budapest. Being on the smaller side and not part of chain, while also running nightly dinners and events after that makes it easy to meet some great people and head out to see the nightlife. Volunteers & staff are great which keeps up the great atmosphere and vibe. Beds are comfortable, rooms have A/C, and the facilities are nice & clean. Perfect spot to see the city from!
