How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewBooking.com let me book a room that was overbooked, oops, but when I got there the employee yelled at me because of booking.com, insisting he sent a message earlier which he had not (I got the message about the cancellation just as I arrived), and didn’t even want to let me sit in the lobby to figure out next steps, even though I’m a woman traveling alone and might was falling. If you’re looking for actual hospitality and safety, don’t stay here.
The employee was one of the meanest people I’ve ever met while traveling.
Dear Elana. Thank you for sharing your feedback. We truly regret that your experience was not as expected and understand how these situations can be frustrating. However, we believe it's important to clarify the context in a respectful and transparent manner. At the time you made your reservation, we promptly informed you via message that an overbooking had occurred due to a technical issue on the Booking.com platform — an external digital travel agency. Despite having read this message, you chose to arrive at the property and verbally demanded a room that had already been communicated as unavailable. Our team remained courteous and initiated the relocation process in line with our customer service standards. Nonetheless, it is also our responsibility to ensure a safe and respectful environment for both guests and staff. We have an active video surveillance system that supports our version of events. Please note that Amaya Centro Histórico is a privately owned business, and as such, we reserve the right of admission. We strive to uphold values of respect, safety, and hospitality at all times. Unfortunately, your actions did not align with these values, and we believe it is important to acknowledge this. We are proud of the many positive reviews we receive from guests who value our team's warmth and professionalism. In this case, a guest misconduct report has been filed, as your behavior was incompatible with the type of experience we aim to provide. We sincerely wish you all the best in your future travels. Sincerely, Operations Management Amaya Centro Histórico

Verified reviewReally enjoyed our stay here…. Such reasonable value for what is essentially an apartment with everything you need (kitchen, tv, bathroom) Our host Juan was such a lovely guy…. Gave us loads of recommendations for Guatemala City and the area we were staying… He was so knowledgeable as well and even gave us some very solid recommendations for our next destination in El Salvador. A true gent and we will definitely return here the next time we’re in Guatemala City.
No complaints really… Keep in mind it is very central so it can get a little bit noisy but not too bad. Same as most other central locations.

Worth mentioning very noisy with traffic outside. Would have been great if we could have dropped our bags before check in time.

DANGER, DON’T BOOK HERE. If staying at Amaya Centro Historico, you are taking risks for your safety and that of your fellow travellers! This is the first time that I feel obliged to warn guests not to book at a place, after 10+ happy years on booking.com. I have also asked booking.com to take Amaya Centro Historico from their website to avoid any harm for their customers, with video evidence documenting the agressive, threatening and dangerous behaviour of the hotel owner. The erratic hotel owner exploded after I kindly inquired about the use of the kitchen (foreseen in the booking) and mentioned (again, politely) that it was unfortunate that the use of kitchen was not possible. As documented in the video recording sent to booking, the owner of the Amaya centro historico hotel, shouted at me, threatened me and kicked me out, leaving me out in the street with my belongings as the sun went down. District One, in Guatemala City, where the hotel is located, becomes with the night fall a high crime area in one of Latin America’s more dangerous capitals. The hotel owner knowingly put me at risk and even refused to let me stay in the lobby for a few minutes additional minutes to let me find another hotel, threatening me again. After my complaint on booking.com, the owner sent me a message falsely claiming that I had recorded his employees, though he was the only person present in the lobby when I felt obliged to record him kicking me out, shouting at me, threatening me and saying that, as a business owner, he did not need to provide any reason (so no mention of his fiction of me filming his employees). I think my polite remark about the unavailable kitchen must just have triggered a mental break down. I really hope that booking.com takes the necessary steps to take out this hotel, to avoid any physical harm to hotel guests getting kicked out in the dangerous streets of districts one for no reason and with no warning in the middle of the night.
Dear Hendrik, We take guest feedback very seriously, and we would like to clarify the circumstances surrounding your stay to provide an accurate representation of the events. 1. Unauthorized Recording & Policy Violation: Your reservation was terminated due to your engagement in unauthorized video recordings of our staff, which is a direct violation of both our internal policies and Guatemalan law (Law 4487-2014), which explicitly prohibits recording inside private property without consent. This policy is in place to protect the privacy and security of both our staff and our guests. 2. Kitchen Availability & Early Check-in Courtesy: Before your early check-in at 13:00, which was granted as a courtesy, you were explicitly informed that the kitchen would not be available due to renovations. You accepted the reservation as is, knowing this limitation in advance. As an alternative, you were granted access to another kitchen, which you chose not to use. 3. Misrepresentation of Events: Your description of the situation is exaggerated and misleading. At no point were you left in the street "in the middle of the night"—your check-out was during daylight hours. You were not "kicked out for no reason", but rather for engaging in unauthorized video recording—something that you yourself admitted in your complaint. Your behavior was disruptive and disrespectful toward our staff, which is why we had to take firm action. 4. Regarding Safety Concerns in Zone 1: Zone 1 is the historic center of Guatemala City and one of the most visited areas in the capital, filled with cultural sites, embassies, and businesses. Like in any major city, caution is advised, but to suggest that we "knowingly put you in danger" is misleading and unfair. 5. Refund Process: Despite the circumstances, we have already processed your refund as a courtesy. Please check with your financial institution for confirmation. At Amaya Centro Histórico, we are committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all our guests. However, privacy violations, disrespect towards staff, and failure to follow policies are not tolerated under any circumstances. We understand that you are disappointed with the outcome of your stay, but we encourage all guests to respect the rules that are in place to ensure mutual respect, security, and a pleasant experience for everyone. Sincerely, Amaya Centro Histórico Management

Verified reviewTony the hostel manager was amazing and couldn't do enough to help. Can't believe this hostel hasn't got more positive reviews. The hostel is walking distance to everything in Zone 1. Secure great WiFi and the room had a sitting area, separate kitchen and separate bedroom and bathroom. Felt like your own one bedroom apartment. Couldn't recommend highly enough.
Everything was perfect.
