How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewHaving my own little apartment. The check in was so easy, and we needed to come early due to having a whisky tasting, and the owner was very accommodating. Location was so close to everything, was a beautiful 10 minute walk. The apartment was stunning.

Verified reviewThe room was very clean. Enough towels and pillows are available with a note to say where we could collect more pillows if needed. WiFi was good. Great location on the waterfront and a10-minutee walk into town. The extra touches of a can of irn bru, a teacake, and whisky were nice (but only one of each when there were two guests was a bit confusing!)
Disappointed on arrival to find we weren't in the main B&B but in a small annexe out the back. I see from previous reviews that I'm not alone in this. I think the owner needs to make it very clear on Booking.com that it is completely separate (I did look on their own website during our stay and see that theres much more clarity about types of rooms offered). I looked back on my booking, and all it says is that it has a separate entrance. Again, there are photos of the Annexe, but after lots of lovely pictures of the B&B itself. The Annexe is a large size. However, it offered little privacy with the big window and people walking past. So, unfortunately, we had the blinds closed, making it feel like a cave! We thought our neighbours were particularly noisy walkers and snorers, but looking at reviews, I can see the noise issue has been raised before. Perhaps the owners may need to soundproof more or replace the hard floor with carpet. We didn't mind the self check in system as we're used to AirBnB type stays, but when I choose a B & B it is usually to support a local business and meet the owners, so if you look for that during your stay you may not like this system. I found it quite expensive for what we got, considering no breakfast offered (unless willing to pay £13 pp per day for continental!) and genuinely feel like we didn't have the kind of experience I would be looking for from a family run B&B

Verified reviewLocation was very good, the room was very clean and the shower was excellent. When you are out all day travelling around its exactly what you need. Close proximity to the facilities in the town and just enough of a walk to let your dinner go down.

Verified reviewEasy access. Close enough to city centre. “ Marky Dans “ a great find !
The room was too bright - as the blind on the front door did not stop light coming in very early in the morning. Just doesn’t “ work “ as it is. Needs a blackout curtain too.

Verified reviewLocation was perfect. Breakfast suited us but some people might like something hot.
There was nothing not to like, only thing we would ask for next time would be a room on the first floor.

Verified reviewVery good location, nice view over Oban’s bay. Spacious car park. Spacious apartment with separate kitchen/dining, sitting area and bedroom. Very clean. Check-in and out was hassle free, all straightforward
Very small details - mattress very firm and I could not find a sponge in the kitchen to clean dishes.

Verified reviewBeautiful view from one of the front rooms - binoculars included in the window seat to look at the harbor. The room was very quiet with a super comfortable bed. The Inn is family run and we met Ian at breakfast - very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is continental buffet style which suited us perfectly as we wanted to get on the road. We walked to dinner and the Witchwood Inn is very well suited to walk to a variety of restaurants.
Nothing - it was great.

Verified reviewGood location, nice walk into town. Room was lovely. Great shower. Nice touches - Whisky, Irn Bru and Tunnocks Tea Cake.
Walls were quite thin. On our last night the guests next door were moving the furniture around till very late. By the sound of it they did a full revamp.
