How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewBeautiful outside areas.
The rooms are not soundproof at all and we could hear doors closing and people rolling their luggage down the hall all night. Then at 7am in the morning someone was playing music in the hall and the housekeeper knocked on our door around 9am to see if we had checked out yet- we were trying to get some sleep! And check out it at 10:30am and not 12pm like the booking.com listing stated. We were exhausted. I had additional nights booked and I tried to cancel but it was too late. They gave us a new room for the next night but there was quite a bit of mold in the shower. Exhausting.

Verified reviewRelatively good value during the Fringe festival, right on the doorstep of Holyrood Park / Arthur's Seat, staff at 24/7 reception very friendly and helpful, big generous breakfast, comfortable enough room (a student dorm room) with a sink in the room and shared bathrooms.
The dorm room block I was in didn't have any kitchen facilities which was surprising. On a warm day, the room can stay fairly warm without a fan, although the window staying open helped.

Verified reviewBreakfast was the highlight. Amazing buffet with lots of choices. Location is 2 miles away from the Royal Mile which for us was a good walking distance. Facilities were basic but had everything we needed. Bed was firm and comfy.
Noisy - bring your earplugs and your own pillow. Was clean if you don’t look under the bed. We stayed for three nights. Two nights were fine, but the final night was very noisy with a group of school students and we could hear every word of the people next door to us. The walls are paper-thin and banging doors kept us awake all night.

Verified reviewPrice compared to alternatives. Grounds were attractive. Close to bus stop.
Floors were not very clean anywhere. Tv was tiny. Checkout slow. Long line that didn't seem necessary.

Verified reviewAmazing breakfast! Even better than expected, huge choice of food, all type. Super nice personnel and the 24 hours availability is very appreciated . Approx 20 minutes walk to the Edinburgh fringe venues. Clean rooms, confortable bedding.
Just a bit noisy with the doors and people coming and going but that can be a problem anywhere. I'm not fond of shared bathrooms and there were only 2 for 5 rooms I think but there were always available when I needed them, never had to wait and they were clean.

Verified reviewNice clean room for a night's stay, beautiful university environment is a bonus. The town centre isn't far as well and plenty of buses if you don't want to walk
Obvioulsy, the washroom is shared but not a lot of people were there.

Verified reviewGreat value and well-run operation. Very easy to get to the city center with multiple bus routes dropping off right outside the campus. It's a university dorm, so the room was nothing fancy, but it matched the pictures and was spacious for one person.
Walls were very thin, to the point that when anyone in my hall opened their door during the night, it sounded like my door was opening (I don't know how the students put up with this!). A lot of mildew in the shower as well, but thankfully my hall had a separate bath/shower that was much better.

Verified reviewNice place to stay. Nice surroundings, especially the nearby park with Arthur's seat. Also liked that there's a swimming pool and gym right next to the hotel. Really nice staff too. Facilities ok. Breakfast was also quite nice.
Quite expensive (though Edinburgh is). For this price usually furniture in rooms in better condition and own bathrooms. Were ok though. Lots of people in the hotel so at peak times Breakfast facilities really full and also there can be a long que for check-in. Also gym and swimming pool not included.

Verified reviewThe views to Arthur's seat are perfect. Nice walk to city centre or buses nearby. Very good value for edinburgh which is so expensive for accommodation, especially considering the big and varied breakfast. Great option when traveling as a group because everyone gets their own space. There is parking which is a major win in edinburgh, but limited spaces.
Cleanliness was not great. Clean sheets, dusted etc but mould in showers and the carpets really needed a deep clean. I expect they do the yearly deep clean before the students come back but at the end of the hot summer season, the place was pretty stinky and in need of a deep clean.

Verified reviewValue, location, gardens. Major kudos to the groundskeeping crew for the beautiful flowers all across campus! Easy check in process and friendly staff.
I liked everything, so there is really nothing negative to say. Cannot top the value offered for a stay in Edinburgh in such a great location.

Verified reviewBreakfast was amazing. The beds were comfortable but tea and coffee facilities in tbe room were a little sparse.
Tea and coffee making facilities could have been better and the staff could have been more helpful and friendly, instead they looked like they didn’t want to be there.

Verified reviewThe accommodation is located in a quiet part of the city but the centre as well as the Holyrood Park can be reached fairly quickly. The beds were super comfortable!
During breakfast, I was missing some vegetables to supplement the variety but this is only a minor thing.

Verified reviewGood location during the festival. Towels and sheets provided. Cheaper than hotel. Friendly staff.
Long queue to check in. Uncomfortable beds, thin pillows, window didn’t close and very noisy with people banging doors and generally being being loud even at 2am. Breakfast far too busy, no available seating although selection of food on offer was good.

Verified reviewVery beautiful and quiet location near Authur’ s Seat. Good breakfast. Nice stuff.
The window in the room cannot be completely opened and I had to live with the strong and unpleasant smell of the perfume of the previous guest. It takes ages for the water in the toilet to collect, so you can flush it again. The floor of the communal toilet was constantly.

Verified reviewThe room was on the ground floor so no view. Otherwise it felt tidy, secure and comfortable. The bathrooms were clean - I definitely preferred using the bathroom with a shower over the bath as the shower cubicle was very small. The bathrooms were always clean and I never had to queue for either loo or shower. Room felt spacious and it was nice to have a full-length mirror. I think some people had a kettle in their room. That would have been a nice touch.
Breakfast - The fried eggs weren't cooked properly (sunny side up but no attempt to cook the white on top was made) and the hot items at breakfast (including the eggs) were cold. I found out that breakfast actually starts at 7am not 7.30am so that explained why it was all cold. Perhaps boiled eggs as an option as well? Everything else was very good at breakfast. Porridge and natural yoghurt, fresh fruit and melon. Some days they had pancakes, some days they had bagels with cream cheese. Ham, cheese etc. Tea/coffee/hot chocolate (decaf tea and herbals). Toast and rolls. Busy but well managed.
