How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewI had a transport issue and the owners of the hostel helped me and waited for me at my late arrival. They are super sweet and the hostel is really comfortable and great.

Verified reviewSo, when I read the reviews, I didn't get it right, so here is the sad truth: Puerto Lopez is quite a shabby, dirty village with all sorts of people coming here in search of money when the whale season is on. The locals have to survive somehow through the rest of the year. That's where the prices come from. This hosell is definitely not a bad option, if you for some reason have to spend a night exactly in Puerto Lopez. Which I would advise to avoid at any cost.
So, if you decide to still spend a night here, be prepared to not be able to sleep at all. And I mean it. Of course, it's not every night, but we were lucky: some "cool guys" decided to show the whole village, how cool they are and were driving through the village with the music on between 3 and 6:30 am. Loud music meant the parked cars went on alarm and my body was shaking from the cool bass. It has nothing to do with the hostel itself of course...The hostel itself is like...Needs some polishing...And the smell of dogs everywhere...Like my hair was smelling of it the next day...The owners are nice, they agreed to cancel our second night without extra charges...

Verified reviewStaying here was like staying in a treehouse. I felt completely immersed in nature and felt very relaxed. The bed was king size and very comfortable. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I was able to book a tour to see the whales directly through Hostal Monte Líbano and was picked up right out front. I booked my stay several months in advance and coordinated my accommodations with the staff prior to my arrival. I look forward to staying at Hostal Monte Líbano in the future when I return to see the whales.

Verified reviewThe room itself was wild; two stories plus a loft (one room on each floor) in the family room with terrace. We used the top two rooms. The beds were comfortable enough. We enjoyed the balcony (view to the backyard with the ocean off to the side) and the shared terrace on the upper level of the hostel. The shared kitchen is a plus and it was nice to have room for a few small items in the fridge. Short walk to the pier and the Malecon. About 15 minutes walking to the town center and fewer than 10 to the bus stop.
There's no A/C unit, but there is a small portable A/C on the second floor that we fought over frequently. There is a fan on the bottom floor. The bathroom is on the bottom floor and is a little dingy. We liked the treehouse feel, but note that if you have issues with stairs or depth perception, it's the wrong room for you. You have to go through the office and living areas of the hostel to enter and exit.

Verified reviewThe location is amazing. Right next to the beach and on the main strip but far enough away from the action to feel tranquil and authentic. The owners have grown a garden all around their property to make it feel tropical and natural even in the middle of the city. They arranged our tour for us. The room was an actual treehouse which was amazing.
I thought full breakfast was included but it was just some rolls and cheese. However, everything is open and available just down the street so not really necessary.

Overall cleanliness and smell were poor, and the location was not a nice part of town.

Verified reviewThe family was nice and always helped by questions. They gave us the room cheaper cause I made a mistake via booking a family room for 4 people. Free water for drinking and hor water in the shower. Close to the beach and short distance to the main beach street. We all slept fine but in the beds.
It's not that clean. The house and furniture are very old. It doesn't look like on the pictures. Our room was tiny and spread over 3 levels (bunk bed on ground level, queen bed on 1st level and a small bed on 2nd level. They have plenty of dogs, which I like, but it smells a lot of "wet dog" in the house.

Verified reviewThis has a great location and the family that runs it are very helpful!!
It can be a little noisy at night when music/festivals are happening. It can smell strong of the dogs that they own if you have allergies. However, still a great place, price, and location.

Verified reviewOur room was amazing! It was essentially a treehouse with a lofted second floor. There was a hammock in the room that was absolutely lovely to lounge in. Beds had mosquito nets, which was helpful. The property also has the cutest dogs, as well as a parakeet, as pets! Our breakfast on the terrace was lovely and only cost us about $5.
Nothing!

Verified reviewBeautiful bamboo treehouse-style rooms, with excellent hot, consistent showers and pretty views. Hammocks and sofas for our personal use. We enjoyed being away from the main, noisiest part of town, surrounded by trees and birds, and so close to the beach. Nice restaurants are only 5 minutes walk away. The owners are helpful and friendly, they shared some homemade empanadas with us and helped with booking tours and taxis.
There were a lot of mosquitoes in that area. Not sure if it's the time of year or the friendly but smelly dogs downstairs - but the mozzies got us every night. Keeping doors shut and the mosquito net over the bed had no effect against them. Also, Saturday night is noisy in Puerto Lopez if you're a light sleeper.

Verified reviewThe owners are fabulous. I messaged with them before my arrival, and they made sure I arrived safely. I had the air-conditioned room with the private bathroom, hot water and high flush toilet. I was so comfortable in my accommodations and it’s such a good price.
The Wi-Fi could be stronger as it was not strong enough to stream.
