Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaIf you're looking for a party hostel or a place to meet other travellers, this isn't the open-concept environment to do so, although there is a beautiful yard and patio at the back for a hangout. I noticed that most guests mostly just came here to rest and had their own plans. Which I didn't mind, this was perfect for me, as I had my own plans and family and friends to meet up with.
Jose was an exceptional desk host. Accommodations and flexibility were easily made for me to stay an extra night and check out and leave my baggage in my room later until I needed to leave in the evening. Excellent communication and help to provide information on things to do in Montanita as well as help to plan for a Galapagos tour. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful if I needed anything. Breakfast options could of varied a bit more, as I was lactose intolerant and it breakfast was mostly just granola and yogurt. But other than that, this place is very clean and quiet and not even a 1 minute walk from the beach and 3 minute walk from the town. I would definitely be staying here again on my next trip.

United KingdomNothing to complain about!
Loved this hostel and extended to a week when I initially only had 3 nights booked. The volunteers are the best and create a super inclusive and chilled atmosphere that's fun too. They have free mozzie nets and brekky and a super well equipped kitchen, loved it here and was hard to leave!

AustriaNot seeing more of Lena's tricks:(
Upon arrival I was greated by Lena and her magic tricks. They were truely amazing and without a doubt one of my highlights of Monenita, if not whole Ecuacdor. The magic show will leave you stunned and I can assure you will only think about possible solutions, on how her tricks work. She is the modern Hudini!!!

CanadaI had booked for 5 days and ended up staying for 10. Great communal areas for meeting new friends plus a great terrace to pair with the free coffee. I’d recommend this place for backpackers and regular travellers

The location to the beach is amazing, just a few steps and you are on the beach! I also spent a lot of time on the terrace enjoying the view from a hammock. I would often take my breakfast up there and see whales in the sea. I like that they have a kitchen that you can use and the staff are really friendly.

ColombiaEverything was great!
Everything was excellent!! The close proximity to the beach, the beautiful view from the terrace, great wifi on all floors to work remotely and a nice little kitchen to make your own meals. An excellent option for a hostel if you want to come to Montanita to Surf for a while, meet people from all over the world, and do the occasional nite out to town to party.

Czech RepublicUpon arrival, I experienced a little shock from the ugly, dark and tiny room with a view of the wall - see photos. The view of the (gray) sea and (gray) sky was only from the upper terrace, where you could only climb up a very steep wooden staircase. Watch out for injuries when you climb down! Everything was shabby in the hostel. I understand that living in Switzerland (where the owner lives) is expensive (the most expensive in Europe), so there is no money left for hostel renovations, but on the other hand, paint and varnish are cheap in Ecuador. In the evening, I noticed that my sheet (and also the blanket) were dirty. I asked the receptionist for a change. He objected that the sheet was clean, there were "only" stains on it. But he changed it for me. The next morning he didn't even answer my greeting. I had to greet him 3 times before he answered me angrily. He acted angry (only towards me) for the next few days. So don't believe it when the owner here responds to every criticism that if the guests didn't like something, they should have complained on the site, because everything could be solved. Yes, you can complain on the site, and then you can "enjoy" unpleasant treatment from the local staff (and/or blocking from the remote owner from writing a negative review). I have experienced many hostels in different countries, so I can compare that this one was the 2nd worst.
You can read this review only because I communicated with Booking.com for several months and provided evidence that I was actually staying at the hostel. I didn't like it so much in the hostel that I decided that rather than ruining my vacation, I'd rather let the owner payment for 4 nights and I left after 2 nights. However, the owner used a trick so I couldn't write a review since he updated my status to 'no show' - it means that I didn't arrive. As a result, I couldn't even post photos. I finally managed to solve this scam. I hereby salute the owner - it didn't work out. And you all can now enjoy real photos from the hostel. The photos of the hostel are full of sunshine. Forget about it. The sun is there only if you come between December and February. Otherwise, for 9 months you will see gray sky, gray beach sand and gray (and cold) sea. As another guest explained to me, if I want to enjoy a sunny beach, I have to go to nearby Mancora (northern Peru). I should have been put off by the initial misunderstanding during the reservation, but in the end it became clear that I did not ask for an early check-in or an extra standard. Unfortunately, it calmed me down.
