How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe property is lovely and cheerful. The breakfast room overlooks a beautiful garden. A lovely place to spend time outside. There is also a roof deck. The staff made me feel like home. They were very service oriented and helpful with hiring guides and getting taxis. The breakfast is outstanding, very creative and different each day. Historic Cuenca is outside the door. When travelling solo, a place like Casa Montalvo is very much appreciated.
It was perfect.

Verified reviewThis is a beautiful boutique hotel. It is located close to the historic centre, the rooms are comfortable and so quiet. But what really makes this hotel stand out is the highly professional and personable staff. Wilmer and Andres took excellent care of us, they helped us organise all that we wanted to do. We loved this stay so much we have booked another 5 days when we return from Vilcabamba. The breakfast each day is amazing!

Verified reviewMy wife and I loved our three-night stay at Casa Montalvo. Our room was spacious, well-appointed, and beautiful. We felt like we were staying in a palace! More practically, the room had strong Wi-Fi as well as ample hot water. The bed was also incredibly comfortable. We also really enjoyed the rooftop deck which affords a beautiful view of the city skyline. The included breakfast was delightful. Every day offered something different in addition to the delicious omelets on offer. Additionally, the breakfast is served in a lovely area adjacent to the garden. The whole experience was an wonderful event that we looked forward to every day. The staff at the hotel is incredibly helpful and welcoming. The property manager, Wilmer, is very professional and was able to answer our questions and provide advice about things to see and do in Cuenca. The property is located in a convenient and safe area. We walked all over the city during the day and night and never had any problems. The hotel is also located near the tram, which provided easy access to the airport. Highly recommended! I happily rate this property a 10/10. Many thanks for a wonderful stay.

Verified reviewWhat an amazing place! The saddest part of our stay was leaving and only having the opportunity to stay for a single night, if time had allowed, we would have stayed a week! The location is perfect for the old historic centre, the cathedral is an easy walk, so much of the historic centre is walkable from here. The staff were so incredible!!! So kind and helpful, with great English and knowledge to share. Nothing was too much trouble, from extra coffee, so booking taxis and restaurants. The breakfast was one of the best meals we've eaten in Ecuador (and we have eaten very well in this country! - but this was a REALLY great way to start our day!) The Tigrillo was a really fabulous Ecuadorian breakfast cooked and presented beautifully. This is such a beautiful property, very well maintained and full of gorgeous murals on the walls, the roof terrace boasts a stunning view of the city sky line and the garden is a wonderful place to enjoy the breakfast. If we get the chance to return to Cuenca, this is the place we will stay for sure, and the place I would recommend to any friends who plan this trip!

Verified reviewOur room was very spacious, light and airy, with a comfortable king-sized bed. The breakfast was very sumptuous: tropical fruit, rolls, a main plate that changed every morning, coffee and fruit juice. Wilmer who worked at the front desk, who exceedingly friendly, professional and saw to our every need. He arranged for great guides for our walking tour and day trips. Highly recommended—this boutique hotel deserves 10+.
The only minor complaint was street noise, but we soon got used to it. Most other room were located in the quiet interior.

Verified reviewWe loved this unique B&B. The rooms and halls were filled with hand painted details and beautiful wooden furniture. We arrived early on a flight from Quito early in the morning. Our room wasn't yet ready, but nothing how tired we were, they upgraded us to a larger room at no extra charge.
I can honestly say there was nothing I disliked.

The location is perfect, right there in the historic area. The staff are very professional. Do not hesitate to ask them about any suggestions for potential plans for things to do or explore in Cuenca and its surroundings. They are extremely knowledgeable and always willing to help. Verified reviewWe loved everything about our stay! But what really made it special was that it’s an old home turned into a boutique hotel—super charming and full of character. The breakfast was phenomenal—always different, always something local and delicious. The service felt totally personalized. Wilmer, our host, was incredibly attentive and gave us amazing recommendations throughout our stay. The location was perfect—right in the historic old town, but just far enough from the busy areas to feel peaceful. We stayed in the suite, one of the largest rooms, full of colonial and Latin American charm. It felt cozy, elegant, and totally unique. This place has so much personality, yet it feels safe and serene. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Verified reviewMy wife and I travel a lot. We are in hotels for two to three months in a year. This is one of the best properties we have stayed in. The manager’s name is Wilmer. I knew his name before I arrived at the property due to his excellent prior communication. He was present without being intrusive and willing to be of service. The rest of the staff are friendly and attentive. The property is lovely. We stayed in the large king suite. It is a beautiful room filled with period furniture. There are beautiful spaces in the hotel such as the garden area. The location is a five to seven minute walk from the city center. There are many good restaurants within walking distance.
Nothing.

Casa Montalvo is located in the beautiful old town of Cuenca, making it easy to explore the surrounds on foot. The breakfasts were delicious, and different each day. The courtyard garden is lovely. 100% recommend.
