How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Since the room was in the attic, it was a bit warm without air conditioning. However, the host provided very high-quality fans.

You should expect that personnel is speaking at least some english, not only german.

Very difficult to find. The address or the hotel shown is not where the room is! I wasted ages walking around. Had to ask local shops and the tourist office.. The man in the hotel/bar shown was really anoyed showing it is not the first time! The most expensive room in my 14-day travel. €90 for 1 person The room and balcony had not been cleaned following building work as the soles of my feet soon turned red from red brick dust on the floor of the room & balcony. The balcony was worse. Pieces of brick and dust on the chair, table & floor. I attempted to clean, but realised it could never be done as the brick dust was everywhere and at 90 Euros it was NOT my job!!. The room should not be offered until prepared. Very aggressive staff initially. The accommodation owners' response is bitterness for being unprepared and totally untrue, unlike my comments. I never understand people who distort the truth. There is little in their comments true. The photographs of the toilet paper I used to clean and the dirt clearly show how filthy & unprepared the room was. I had a lucky escape. As for me, being aggressive and the owner contacting the police! Bizarre, that means I am an 82-year-old accused of causing criminal damage! I don't carry bags of bricks and dust! Their response simply reverses the truth. and tells a prospective guest to avoid. I had to caution the man at one stage, at 82 I just want a quiet life & expect my reservation to be clean. He apologised as I departed and we both shook hands I rebooked at a lovely, clean place with friendly staff at half the price on Booking.com and had a delicious breakfast!
This case is being handled by the Czech Republic Police and Booking.com. We have warned Booking.com about this guest's behavior. The guest requested a very early check-in for free, which was granted. He was given a clear address where to come, as well as a contact phone number. The guesthouse is in the city center next to the castle. It has never happened that anyone could not find it. Immediately after arrival, the guest wrote that there was dust on the balcony of the room. Within 5 minutes, we personally arrived at the room - the owner and the chambermaid. The owner calmed the aggressive guest, the chambermaid immediately cleaned up the dust that the wind had blown onto the balcony - everything was fixed within a few minutes. However, the guest did not want to return the money in cash, did not want another room, did not want to leave the room, and just aggressively stormed at us. The guest simply abused the accommodation: he used the room, asked us to refund the entire reservation price of 90 EUR, and left after a few hours. We dealt with the matter for many hours, the result is this untrue review and the shocked owners and the staff. We strongly warn Booking.com and all accommodation providers about this guest.

Dirty sheets, rooms with spider webs, unprofessional staff.
These guests are writing bad reviews to our guest house everywhere without any reason. The lady requested to change the room before she comes because she did not like the design of butterflies, better category of the room was given for free, they requested to come earlier - also answered positively, after that everything was bad. Your behavior was unacceptable and was reported to booking.com. Melnik city is admired by many people which are coming the whole year - our guest house is still full, not only in the season. Nothing was dirty: as an owner I personally checked all rooms before arrival of guests as usually and nothing you write is true. Our staff is very professional. Your review does not correspond to more than 1260 reviews. Please next time think well before you damage someone without any reason, this behavior is very unpleasant.
