How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe worst hotel experience: a lack of even the most basic service, and a complete absence of hospitality. If respect and warm service matter to you, don’t waste your time or money here. The famous Cape Verdean “no stress” spirit is nowhere to be found. The rooms we were given looked nothing like the photos shown on Booking. The hotel is outdated, noisy (we endured loud construction work on our floor throughout our stay), and poorly maintained. The pictures speak for themselves. The most absurd moment: while retrieving our luggage, an employee approached us in a suspicious and aggressive manner, shouting “relax!” — as if we were stealing our own bags. For the record, the so-called luggage storage area is completely unsupervised. Context: €900 for 3 nights. We stayed in several upscale hotels during our trip to Cape Verde — this one doesn’t even deserve a two-star rating. Avoid at all costs.

Verified reviewBreakfast - sufficient, decent options with some traditional meals included. Variety of hot drinks. Ocean view with both indoor and outdoor tables. Security - the nice security guard that walked me to my room when I returned late to the hotel and felt it was too dark, quiet and filled with stray cats to go alone. Currency exchange - You can change some money at the hotel. Location - It's right on the beach and very close to the centre.. Hammock - It was nice to have a hammock on the balcony but I didn't quite enjoy the fact that while relaxing on it, you'll be interrupted by stray cats or gardeners and it didn't help that i was on the ground floor.
The water in the fridge is not complementary - you'll need to pay for it. You pay for an omelette at breakfast. You pay for sun loungers by the pool on the beach but not the ones by the reception. The excursions are more expensive when booked at the hotel. Dust and cobwebs in corners, pillow case & towels were worn out. Generally, everything looks clean from far but not when you move closer. I never felt safe in the room as there was no way to lock the door from inside. The key holder is unnecessarily bulky and it comes with a card and the actual room key.

Verified reviewWe had a look at other Hotels and Apartments in the surrounding area. The Hotel O'djo D'agua is easily the Best all-around location. Starting with the excellent Breakfast and sitting area. The Atlantic mere meters-away. The Breakfast Staff were hard-working and great. I don't know the Breakfast Managers name, but the gentleman was super cool and attentive. Excellent fellow. Two excellent swimming pools are adjacent, with a fully-equipped Snack Bar. Excellent food and adult beverages. Just beyond that, the beach starts. Lounge chairs under palm trees here. They charge a few euro's for the Lounge chairs. I assume it is because off-site folk try and take these chairs. The beach is perfect for swimming. The main shopping, dining, and party streets are a short walk away. Perfect. We had so much fun staying here!
We actually stayed at Hotel O'djo D'agua the week before. We had room #364. Loved the room. We booked directly, using booking for the 2nd stay. So, I tried to communicate with Reception that we would like to have #364, or similar, for our 2nd stay. I asked multiple times, through booking, and email. But, no one at Reception answered me. So, that was disappointing. The room we got in the end was fine. But, Reception needs to timely answer inquiries.

Verified reviewThe location of this hotel was the best part. It also has a very nice infinity pool and the beach next to the hotel is beautiful. Food is also pretty good.
You need to pay for the sunbeds at the beach and at the infinity pool. Staff was not even trying to accommodate our child's needs and the service wad consistently slow.

Verified reviewBoth room and bathroom are really spacious, clean and well-lit. Comfortable bed (although with foam mattress) - and I am fussy when it comes to pillows but this one actually allowed me to sleep :) Big balcony with 2 chairs, table, clothes dryer and fitting for hammock (including hammock :)). Plenty of storage space. Full size mirror. Nice surroundings, beach bar, views. Excellent food in the restaurant (when paid for). In general, a nice hotel in a good location. Improvements needed when it comes to people. Be aware that the beach is public and sunbeds and umbrellas are to be paid for (4 EUR/day each, at the time of writing). Same goes for the Infinity pool. The other pool is pretty much covered by vegetation and even then there are just few sunbeds. So be prepared to pay or to lay in the sand.
Extremely uncomfortable (single) chair in the room, rather unappealing breakfast with a really bad coffee, at the beginning bit confusing layout (tiny map of the areal would help), very few sunbeds available (but that's limitation by space), no really cold water in the bathroom (be extra careful if you get sunburnt) but mainly (lack of) services/communication. Few examples: 1) Airport shuttle for a fee is listed on the booking.com. I asked how much it would be on 02/06/2025. I arrived to the hotel on 17/06/2025. I received an answer for my question on 23/06/2025 and it read "we do not have our own transport" 2) Info stating do not try to replace consumed items from minibar is OK. Minibar containing single item of 1.5l still water is not OK for 4* hotel. Same goes for tea/coffee - no coffee at all and just 2 tea bags - both herbal. I used one and it didn't even get replaced by the end of the stay. Ridiculous, honestly. 3) Pro-green activities are important to me. Despite all the right-sounding info displayed pretty much everywhere, my towel was changed at every cleaning (and I never left it on the floor) and half of the time I came back to AC turned on, once to freezing 17°C!!! As in many other hotels, the only way of protecting the environment is to keep "do not disturb" sign on constantly :( 4) Cape Verde is very breezy in June. Having single sign with "Do not disturb" on one side and "Please clean the room" on the other is a really bad design. I got woken up by cleaning lady at 9AM sharp regularly, as the sign was blown away and turned... 5) I reported locked safe the morning after arrival. Didn't get unlocked till end of my 14 nights stay. But then nothing went missing :) 6) Service in bar fairly slow. Depending on the member of staff (I guess) you might get condiments or you might not as well. Cutlery is always to be asked for. 7) I was given some paperwork to fill in at...

Verified reviewThe staff was very nice and helpful and the property was close to the beach.
The batteries ti our safe lock were not secured properly só they dislodged when we shut the safe door. As a consequence we couldn’t open our safe and had to wait the entire day for a second person to come to room with a key to open it.

Might be good to learn some Portuguese because the staff struggled with English. Service is slow as is usual in a lot of places. But you’ll see lots of staff and it’ll still take a long time to get a coffee/drink.

Verified reviewI enjoyed the view from by room. The view of the ocean was spectacular. The hotel is great for relaxing and being right on Santa Maria beach, you didn't have to go far for anything.
The I didn't like was that entrance was a sliding door and looked over the back street. One day the maid must have mopped with old water because the smell left in the room was horrid. I got sick from it. Had to air the room out and use my cleaning products to get the smell out. If ordering a steak from the restaurant, ensure that you specify how you want it cooked and check it.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We're glad you enjoyed the spectacular ocean view and appreciated the hotel's convenient location on Santa Maria Beach for a relaxing stay. We sincerely apologize for the issues you encountered with the entrance door and the odor in your room. We will address these concerns with our housekeeping team to prevent similar situations in the future. Verified reviewIt’s a beautiful property with style and charm. Breakfast was varied and plentiful. Location on the beach was nice.
It was super noisy at night. We brought this up to the staff multiple times and they really couldn’t care less. We also had other queries essentially ignored (we asked them to help us use the safe in the room, which requires a member of staff to use, and they told us they would come up and help but they did not). No one explained the layout of the hotel (and it’s quite complicated) so e.g. we couldn’t find the restaurant on our first morning - another guest had to show us. Cleaning was average. The outer bedsheets had clearly not been changed from previous guests on our first night so we asked the staff, and they said they would do extra cleaning in the room, but no real improvement. The cleaning of the floor and the balcony could have been better too. Overall the stay was fine because the hotel itself is undeniably charming, but no personal touch at all from the staff made us feel quite unwelcome.
Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We sincerely apologize for the issues you experienced during your stay. It’s disappointing to hear that noise disturbance, staff responsiveness, and cleanliness did not meet your expectations. We take your comments seriously and will address these concerns with our team to improve our service and ensure a more welcoming experience for future guests. We do appreciate that you found the hotel charming, and we regret that the personal touch was lacking during your visit. Verified reviewThe structure is nice overall, with spacious rooms, a pool and a bar. The view from the hotel bar is also really nice and scenic. The hotel is also in a very central location which makes it possible to reach every part of the city in about 10 minutes.
However there is various problems I found with this hotel that I believe is important for future customers to acknowledge before booking. Overall I did not enjoy my stay and I believe it is a very poor value for money hotel. First, in front of the hotel is full of shops and people selling souvenirs that whistle, scream and bother you every time you come in or go out of the hotel. Second, the staff was continuously trying to sell something (almost trying to scam in my opinion). When asking for directions the reception was almost refusing to answer and continuously tried to convince to book taxis at excessive I rates, insisting that every place was too far (the whole city can be walked in 10/15 minutes). Furthermore, this sort of behaviour has been shown also when asking where to seek for medical advice. During my stay I required medical advice due to a malfunctioning of the shower, which did not have cold water and suddenly dispensed boiling water on my sunburn. This caused a large rash and intense pain for hours and convinced me to check it with a doctor. Upon asking the reception about which structure to go to, they again tried to convince me to book a taxi by telling me it was too far to go by foot (I was able to walk and only my shoulders were burning), and tried to sell the option of calling the doctor to the structure for €85. It is important to keep in mind that the health center was less than 10 minutes walk from the hotel and I was explicitly just asking for the name of the place. Finally, the issue with the shower was not resolved or considered further, which made it impossible for me to shower during my stay. The cherry on top was the fact that even some of the products offered at the breakfast buffet were considered extras and had to be paid separately (not explicitly written anywhere). The coffee machine available to the customers has a range of choices, but apparently only espresso is included.
