How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewLocation is perfect, just a 2 minute walk from the beach. There's a shower outside to shower off the sand from the beach. There are a few hammocks in the garden that you can use, also 2 fridges for your food, a kitchen that you can use. Staff (kind staff) responding is fast by app and checking in early was not a problem at all. Access to gate is good and 24/7 available.
The bed was real saggy, a bummer. There were insects in the room when we arrived, maybe the previous guests left te door open much, or it could be because of a hole in the mosquito screen in the shower. There were actually several feces on the floor from lizards (they'll always find a way in your room).

Geckos are hard to keep out of anywhere in Costa Rica, those little lizards are just part of the charm of being in Nature and the jungle. Sorry if you found a few dropping which is unusual as we are always sweeping and reverifying and cleaning to keep our rooms in optimal shape for our guests. Sometimes they are faster than we are. Verified reviewThey didn't come to clean the room or take out the garbage. The water heater gave me an electric shock while using it. The bed was uncomfortable, woke up with back pain.
We are sorry to hear you were unhappy. We automatically go into the rooms to clean unless the "do not disturb" is on the door. Could this be perhaps why? We wish you alerted us to the issues while here so we could have addressed it right away and most definitely changed rooms or the bed for you. Our goal is for you to have a lovely stay with us.

Verified reviewWhile we only stayed one night, the hammock and the shared kitchen and lounge area made it seem like a place that would be fun to hang out for a bit. The bed and sheets were clean and comfortable.
Our room seemed to be on the edge of the property and there were some dogs barking and truck noises at night/in the early morning. Our room also seemed to be filled with mosquitoes despite having screens on the windows. Perhaps there came in while the room was being cleaned. The good news is that the strong fan seemed to keep them off us while sleeping.
Thanks Allison for appreciating our attention to cleanliness and comfort. Yes, we have many people that stay several nights (and extend to stay longer!) May is the worst month in the year for mosquitos... after the first rains they come out in droves, so unfortunately they are here. We do as you mentioned screens on all windows and take care to keep a clean and well tailored garden to avoid them as much as we can. Doors being closed definitely helps! Sorry for any neighbor that made noise for you in the morning. We are conveniently located in town away from the bars, the traffic and music of the restaurants, or people but occasionally a neighbor or two could be busy in the morning but generally its very quiet. On a second night/morning, I'm certain you would have been happy. Only sounds from the the Waves & Birds in the garden. Pura Vida, Amy

Verified reviewEnjoyed our stay at Tropical Sands! A quiet place in a more secluded area, but still close enough to walk to the main areas in town, felt very safe staying here. It was nice to have a communal kitchen and resources for any activities to book. Our AC stopped working momentarily and staff was very quick in fixing it for us and had no other issues!

Verified reviewLocated conveniently across from a long, deep, beautiful beach with huge rolling waves, a 2 minute walk to a good supermarket, and just a short walk to the main streets, this is a perfect location. It is set in a lovely tropical garden with many musical birds to enjoy. The grounds are kept very clean and tidy, as are the simple yet comfortable rooms. Staff are warm and welcoming. We had a lovely patio amongst the treetops to enjoy our morning coffee and evening relaxation.

Verified reviewThe best thing about the accommodation is that is walking distance from the beach. The rooms were basic but covered what we needed and the garden area offers a tranquil space to relax. The staff were also very friendly and accommodating over both of our stays.

No AC in some rooms. There was some confusion because the property says there is AC. Beds were uncomfortable.

You BOOKED a fan room at $58.50 nightly. If you wanted an AC room, you only needed to have booked that online OR modify your reservation when you arrived as we indeed have 10 AC rooms! It is your responsibility to book or ask for what you prefer. Yes it's a bit more expensive then a fan room as AC cost us more, but we indeed have that option, maybe next time!

Very expensive for what it was. Extremely basic room. Bad mattress. Had to pay cash. No pool.
We are happy you liked our great location so close to the beach. We have 2 cats on property and sometimes our sweet dogs Marley and Disco are with us for a few hours before a beach walk. They are only occasionally there. If you didn't like your mattress, we could have given you a softer or harder, it's a pity you didn't mention it during your 1-night stay. Our $85 per night for an air-conditioned private room is actually VERY affordable for a beach town, we have the most reasonable private hotel rooms in town, another reason why we are a own favorite and highly recommended by the other businesses. Paying cash to a small business saves both you and us the extra transactions charges to use your credit card provide immediate settlement and enables us to pay our bills more efficiently. A 5 seems a bit severe of a low score for an issue that could have been solved or a better understanding of small businesses. Pura Vida, Amy
