How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThis was possibly the most unique property we've ever stayed in. It is in the middle of a rain forest, and we saw howler monkeys just outside our bungalow, and a sloth lying in our driveway. The decor was very unique, and the place was spacious. It's also a short walk along private beach access to Playa Uva, one of the great beaches in the area. It's not a Marriott and is quite rustic, but for those who want a jungle ecolodge experience, it was fantastic.

It would have been nice to get a warning about the howler monkeys. They scared my friend :D

Verified reviewBeautiful lodgings in the forest with direct access to the beach, shame about the state of these lodgings!
tired and rundown lodgings, grimy bed/sofa and towels smelt. Showers barely worked and the shower head fell off as I tried to adjust. With proper maintenance & more trees, this place could potentially be a gem! Price totally not proportional with the offering!

Verified reviewI loved how rustic the treehouse was. It was exactly what we were looking for. Sonja is amazing. Great staff!
One night we found a gigantic grasshopper-lookin'-thing in our bedroom. This is not the Lodge's fault, it goes with how rustic the place is. I'm just used to bugs in Canada and was startled by how large it was!! We weren't sure we'd be able to catch it and bring it outside because it looked like it could jump 6ft in the air, but turns out it can barely hop 6inches. So, we caught it in a cooking pot and released it outside.

Verified reviewThe property is stunning. Very natural landscape and well maintained. Loved the walking trails within the property and that we had our own beach access. The suites are stunning! Loved the incorporation of nature into the structural design. All the extra amenities are great! Makes for a very comfortable and relaxing stay.

The beach front was limited and a bit rough (waves, rocks, etc), but a short walk along the beach led to a calm cove with no rocks

Verified reviewTree House Lodge (and the Beach House specifically) must have been nice once, but not any longer. The owner and his staff were well meaning but their vision of eco-friendly accommodation fell far below the standards we found in the other eco-friendly places we stayed during our holiday (for example, Ecolirios, Guácimo and Los Pinos, Monteverde). The Beach House accommodation was one of the most expensive of our entire trip, but the simple truth is that it was shockingly bad - we have never stayed anywhere where the difference between what you pay and what you get is so utterly mismatched.
We arrived with our two teenage children expecting to spend 5 wonderful nights in the Beach House to round off a fantastic 6-centre trip to Costa Rica. However, after one dreadful night we had no other choice but to leave because of serious health and safety concerns about the filthy equipment and dilapidated appliances and the stained, mouldy and broken furniture inside and outside. The fridge and the toilet were on their last legs as were some external doors, which we were advised to kick to get them to open and close! There weren’t enough chairs to sit on inside the house and those outside were practically unusable due to mouldy, damp cushions or the hazardous decking. The lack of a mosquito net for the extra put- you-up bed is just plain wrong – do they think the array of nasty biting insects will take pity on the person using it?!!!!! The grounds were underwhelming and sadly the whole place had a run-down feel to it. In writing this review our hope is that no one else has to suffer the same massive shock and disappointment that we did when we arrived at Tree House Lodge. We so wish we’d taken the time to read all the reviews and not just rely on the overall score! We have attached some photographs to show that the photos provided by Tree House Lodge bare little resemblance to the reallity. We want to acknowledge that the owner has reimbursed us £145 (of the £1280 we paid out) We maintain that the 50% refund we asked for would have been much fairer and certainly more ethical. He has a no refunds policy (go figure!) and has refused to accept that we were badly misled about the accommodation we were purchasing. Pura vida! We refused the calamity that was Tree House Lodge spoil an otherwise wonderful holiday and we managed to find some amazing alternative accommodation. We just hope that the Tree House Lodge will use their windfall from gullible holiday makers like us to fund some much needed improvements to the Beach House.
