How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewAmazing views from the apartment. Very comfortable beds. Spacious, great access to the waterfalls, very clean.
Air conditioning in the main bedroom made a very loud gurgling noise every 20 minutes during the night. Plug in bath didn’t work so showers only. Breakfast was not great, tortillas, refried beans, and an egg on top, maybe Costa Rican but really not to our taste. The driveway was in a terrible state and difficult for four-wheel-drive.

Verified reviewThe setting is beautiful. The hike to the river starts at the property.
We didn’t realize that there were so many gravel stairs.

Verified reviewIt is an experience to stay in the heart of the jungle. We could hear the waterfall, saw a lot of animals walking around and the views were excellent.
The facilities are old and need updating. The rooms are not well isolated so the bugs get in through the cracks. The owner decided she was doing a cleanse and entered our room without permission to place bags of salt in the corner. I believe if I don’t hang up the sign to please clean our room, it means do not enter. But she entered anyway which was a violation of privacy.

Verified reviewThe views were incredible! Anastacia was a wonderful host that took care of anything and everything. Her recommendations for sight seeing and dining were perfect. We had a wonderful time, and finally got to see monkeys at breakfast on our last day!
The drive up the hill was unexpectedly steep and narrow, but most of the time not a big deal at all!

Verified reviewLocation on top of the hill, with a nice view from the balcony and eating area. Good breakfast. Easy access to the falls. Very quiet.
Easy walk down to the city but hard climb back. A bit rough access

Verified reviewBreakfast was excellent; every day something different. I loved the fresh fruit. The muesli was nice but a little burnt. The hanging bridge was fun and great to have a short cut into town.
The water in the 1st room we were offered only came out extremely hot and could not be adjusted. I had assumed the pool would be larger. It was not big enough to swim in.

Verified reviewExcellent big room in montezuma. A bit off the centre but in a very scenic location. I loved the hanging bridge and also the patio for the breakfast.
A bit of a rough road to get there

Verified reviewThe room was spacious and equipped with the essentials. Everything was clean. The view from our balcony was very nice. The pool is a little small, but sufficient for a quick cool off. The breakfast was very good! Got quick answers to all of my questions.
The floor boards were warped because they had obviously had previous water damage; we had to cover a protruding board with a rug to prevent from tripping over it. There was some minor repair work being done a little early in the morning, but nothing terrible. But these were minor issues compared to our wonderful time there.

Verified reviewOutstanding experience! The room was spotless and the ocean views spectacular. The delicious breakfast and coffee served by the staff was excellent and gave our day a jumpstart. We used the shortened trail to Montezuma Falls provided by the hotel to have a special day at the falls. You will not be disappointed!

Verified reviewThe staff are lovely! The location is absolutely perfect for accessing the best waterfall pool. Breakfast was delicious. Loved the suspension bridge.
It’s really hard to find any fault with this property. Walking up the hill from town is pretty strenuous the first few times you do it but if you’re in shape it’s ok. As long as you plan for the hill or have a car you’ll be ok.

Verified reviewThe staff were friendly and helped me arrange a shuttle (although the shuttle company went to the wrong pickup location and almost left me behind despite staff confirming the location x2). And the breakfast in the morning was typical Costa Rican plate style which was also quite good. There were enough towels in my room and the decor was fitting. The pool area was very scenic and the staff allowed me to use the pool after checkout while I waited for my shuttle. The proximity the waterfall is wonderful and you can walk down the trail for free. The views from the location on the cliff are also lovely. The hanging bridge is cool to go on, but don’t expect to be able to use it if you arrive to the hotel on foot as they keep the entrance by the road locked. The shuttle I used would only drop me off at the base of the main road, and it was a very steep climb up the hill. I was able to do it but I do have moderate fitness and had backpacks and not rolling luggage. This is also not proper to stay in if you have accessibility issues as there is nothing but stairs to get to any of the rooms. Not a problem for me but would be for some
Sunshine Sanctuary is in a beautiful location and has the potential to be a 4 star property. However, my experience found it to be slightly run down and not up to the expectations of a serene stay. There is currently construction going on in the hotel. I was not warned of this and had booked a night here to be my quiet relaxing time in between staying in busier hostels. I looked forward to enjoying the jungle environment and spotting some animals, however I was met with the sounds of drills and welding during the day. If I had been warned I would have been more understanding. I would have appreciated a discount but was not offered one. I also did not see any animals which I think could have been from the house. Some of the pillows on the bed were stained or torn. I also had several ants in my room. The property is in the trees so this wasn’t surprising, but be careful not to have any food in your bag. There was no yoga while I was there, this place kind of felt “empty”. It could have a strong soul and vibe and it felt like a bit of a shell.

Verified reviewThere was 4 of us so we rented the apartment as it had two bedrooms and a living room. It had amazing views and we got to see a monkey each morning. Breakfast was included and was made personally each morning upon arrival to the balcony, which also had a stunning view. I didn't get the name of the woman who made us Breakfast each morning but she was absolutely wonderful. This property is at the top of a very steep hill, unless you are quite fit walking it isn't really an option, quads are available for rental in town and a lot of people took that option. We had rented a car for this vacation so we were fine, just note roads are windy and narrow in Costa Rica! My favorite part of the stay was the waterfall that is a 5 minute trail walk away. The waterfall was stunning and we lounged in the waterfall pools almost daily while we were there. The trail usually costs money to use l, but staying at the hotel it's free.
The property was under construction due to a recent slide, which is obviously unavoidable, but they started work really early each morning so it was very noisy most of the day. We were not informed us this prior to our stay nor we were given a discount for our stay during construction, i feel given the noise and daily construction it kept a lot of animals we would have normally seen away. The apartment had ants.. a lot of them. One of our air-conditioning units had a constant drip while being used so we had to keep a pot from the kitchen under it the entire stay and empty it frequently. The bed in the second bedroom was so squeaky and loud. Showers were never hot or even warm. You had hot water during mid day but during the evening when you just want a nice warm shower hot water was no where to be seen.

Verified reviewThe staff was wonderful. They did everything possible to make me (83years old) comfortable. Breakfast was brought to our apartment as I was not able to access the breakfast area. This is a great place if you are young and agile. If not, stay somewhere else. I was also heppy that we were only charged for the one night that we stayed, and that the staff found another place for us.
Unfortunately, the location is really steep. It is mentioned in the description of the hotel, but is even more difficult than I imagined. Only with a lot of help could I access our apartment, and then I did not leave it until we checked out. Also, a lot of construction was going on in the vicinity of the hotel.
