How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewThe hostel was very nice. It was clean with nice common areas. The breakfast was good. The location worked out well for us. It has cool art. Clearly the owners care about this hostel and the people who stay there. We used the transport service from the airport. We had no problem connecting with Javier the taxi driver at the airport. He is a very nice guy. We had a small emergency in the city and Ana was very kind when we contacted her for assistance. What can we say about Nativus Art hostel, great place, great people, great value:)

Verified reviewVery nice hostal, owner is very kind, there is breakfast included. Not too much, but it's a good start of the day. Kitchen was good, had everything to cook. Fridge to store food. The bathroom and shower was nice and clean and had soap to wash your hands. Wifi was good, although I think I sometimes had some issues in the male dorm, since it was furthest from the wifi router. Supermarket is relatively close, a few blocks. City center is walkable, although a taxi might be faster. Quiet neighborhood. Safe at night.
One of the most expensive hostels I ever stayed at. But I feel the price is justified. Costa Rica is expensive, and the quality of the place is good. Aside from that, no real down sides.

The staff cannot be bothered and are not engaging with you. They were almost annoyed when I arrived sighing when opening the locked door (after I had to ring 3x) asking me if I had a reservation. They did not want to prepare something for breakfast a bit earlier or the night before for my early rise. It is all very old and old fashioned. The lockers in the dormitories won’t fit any of the two locks I brought with me. The area feels quite unsafe but is located close to ticabus which is nice. Quite expensive for what you get.

Regarding your arrival, we’re sorry if you perceived any discomfort. For safety reasons, we use a doorbell system and always confirm reservations before allowing entry. About breakfast, our serving hours are from 7:30 to 10:00 a.m., as previously informed. Unfortunately, for operational reasons, we’re unable to serve breakfast outside this schedule. That said, we are always happy to suggest alternatives when asked in advance. As for the lockers, had you mentioned any issue with your lock, we would have gladly provided one for free, as we always do when guests need it. Concerning the style of our space, Nativus Art Hostel is an artistic, rustic-contemporary accommodation, appreciated for its unique charm and non-standard character. Finally, our rates have remained stable for years and are aligned with the quality and central location we offer—just steps from Ticabus and La Sabana Park. Verified reviewCould this be the best place to stay in San Jose? The best place in Costa Rica? This hostel is SO comfortable - the beds have privacy curtains and are like sleeping on a cloud! The manager is delightful - so kind, calm and full of advice. The building itself is simply gorgeous - full of art (as the name suggests) and a simple breakfast is served! It's a 20 minute walk to the centre of San Jose, but Uber is easy to call as well. I can't speak highly enough of this hostel - I simply loved it... I even considered staying an extra night in San Jose just to relax at the hotel a bit longer!

During your stay, the building next to our property was undergoing an intensive demolition process, using heavy machinery such as excavators and hydraulic drills, which created an unusual and unfortunate level of noise. Fortunately, the demolition work has now been completed, and our environment has returned to the calm and peaceful atmosphere that characterizes our hostel. Regarding the price, we’d like to point out that our rates have remained unchanged over the past four years and are actually below average considering the quality of our services, our artistic facilities, and the personalized attention we offer.
