How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

The shower was dirty and I left with a sour taste in my mouth after I was given false hope about being refunded for part of my stay that I had to miss due to a cancelled flight.
Sorry that left such a "bad taste" in your mouth. You contacted us prior to arriving and asked for something free because you were on your honeymoon. We have never had that request before and we were not sure how to handle it. You called us on the day you were supposed to arrive and told us the situation. While we know it was not under your control, it was not under ours either. We offered you to stay another night to complete your stay. You rejected that offer, and that was the last that was discussed. You then left the next morning without warning at 6:00 AM because you wanted to go to Rio Celeste. That was your choice. We were going to talk with you at breakfast and see if there was a compromise, but you left. So, since we have to pay commission for two nights, we charged your account for the second night per our policies and procedures. As for the dirty shower, we both know that is not the case. We check before and after people arrive, and the shower was clean, along with the rest of the room. Unfortunately, you did not discuss this with us before giving us a low review score. Notice the categories that pertain to your stay.

No TV available, no handicap access to rooms, needs remodeling, no transportation around.
When you look at our website, the Booking.com website, and Expedia, they all state there is no TV so you should have known that prior to booking. We are centrally located to many activities. 1 hour to La Fortuna, 2 hours to Monteverde, 1 1.2 hours to Rio Celeste, et. al. However, we are not a touristy town like La Fortuna, and that is what we love about the area. We do not have TV, as shown on all the sites. This is so that windows can be open and people can hear the sounds of the forest. If you needed TV, we have internet, and you could stream on your computer, but most people just enjoy the night and go to sleep early. We also do not say there is handicap access to the rooms. We have had people with difficulty walking, and they usually book the Sun Suite on the bottom floor and park next to the door. As for transportation, you had a driver and did not need any other transportation. We have had people without cars, and if they have a driver, they just contact him to take them places. We can also call taxis from town. Very easy for those who choose not to rent a car.

The walk up to the restaurant was uphill a little, which was a challenge for me, but the beauty of the B and B grounds made up for it.

Verified reviewThe walk from the rooms to the breakfast is beautiful. The breakfast was served on a patio overlooking the property. There were humming birds and toucans to watch as we enjoyed our breakfast and chats with the other guests. There is an adjacent store that sells locally made products as well. There was homemade soap in the bathroom.
So glad you enjoyed your stay with us. We also love the walk between the house and the restaurant. Sometime after we close, we just sit on our patio and look at the property with all the birds, etc. It never gets old. Thanks again for the review. Pura Vida

One of the advantages of our B&B is that Monika is German and can communicate with Germans when they come through. Although most, if not all, speak really good English like you guys, so do not, and it makes them feel more comfortable speaking in their native language. And Monika enjoys that anyway. Verified reviewThis is a beautiful property just outside of town and about 30-40 minutes from La Fortuna (on a good road!) It is filled with gorgeous plants and birds, very tranquil. We could hear howler monkeys and birds early in the morning! The capacious rooms each had bathrooms with beautiful hand painted tiles and wonderful rainforest soaps. I don’t know if they had AC, but the fan was completely adequate to keep us cool at night. Monika makes fabulous, generous omelets and the mango juice is to die for. Our sons (22 & 24) were in heaven. There was also the best gift shop we encountered on our trip- really an art gallery but with moderately priced souvenirs as well. A highlight of our week!

Verified reviewThe room was unique with lots of artistic touches. The grounds were beautiful with lots of birds. We enjoyed watching the bird feeder over breakfast where there was a flock of collered aracari (a type of toucan). The food and coffee were good and the breakfast area overlooks the pond. We arrived a day late due to problems with our flights and the hosts kindly did not charge us for the day we missed.
We would have preferred a later checkout, but everything else was amazing.

We received your call when you were on a tour you had booked the day of leaving and our cleaning lady was waiting to clean the room. YOu could have easily moved your luggage out if you knew you were going to return after checkout time. We would have been glad to keep your luggage until your return.

Verified reviewThe hosts were very friendly and helpful, the lay out of the property is beautiful and functional , the rooms were very spacious and spotless.
The beds ( single and king size) are very springy. Therefore the nights were restless and our back hurt.
Thanks for your review and glad you enjoyed your stay, however, many people both before and after your reservation have slept very well in our beds. We cannot please everyone with our choices of mattresses. Some people like firm, some soft others in the middle and that is what we choose.
