Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesAs stated, newer towels, garbage cans etc. would improve the overall experience. Also, the food was o.k. but nothing great.
The rooms were nice enough. However, nicer towels and garbage cans would improve the experience. It seems like things were outdated for awhile and not replaced with new, quality products.

United StatesWe traveled in April and stayed in the Sloth cabin. It has a balcony with hammock & sitting area, very relaxing, with view to the most beautiful garden. Hotel is in a great location, has beach access, great restaurant, bed was comfortable. Both Sloth cabins have air conditioning and mosquito nets. We left our car in the hotel's parking lot for $10 per night while traveling to a different location - car was perfectly safe. We enjoyed our stay at Banana Azul and staff was wonderful.

United StatesOur unit, and particularly the bath room, needed more drying racks for towels, suits, etc. Kitchen utensils were sparse. The hotel complex is about a 30 minute walk to town which is a mixed blessing: somewhat inconvenient if you don't have a rental car and therefor need to rely on taxis (though bikes are an option), but it also keeps the hotel property quiet and very peaceful!
Excellent breakfast. Beautiful landscaping. Nice shaded beach with lounge chairs. Attentive and friendly staff. Very handy mini-market directly across the street. Very laid-back, casual vibe!

CanadaWorst pillows I've encountered. Low quality, lumpy, inexplicable. Sheets were 40% polyester. Room had no crossbreeze. Room was right next to street. Not enough room for our stuff - we were two and felt cramped. Restaurant was ok but oddly unimaginative given the ingredients available. Music in the beach area was not necessary.
Loved the size and relaxed disposition of the hotel and its staff. The beach access is stunning - definitely its main asset. Not crowded all day beach access. We loved staying here. The staff were friendly and attentive. My comments above are easy to fix details that would have made our stay perfect.

United KingdomThe room was small and very dark so it made it feel a bit depressing. It looked a bit grubby around the ceiling and behind the furniture. The sunbeds on the beach were old and cheap an some days there was no pads so you had to lye on plastic.
We were located right next to the beach which was nice. The staff were pleasant. The breakfast was very nice. The shower was great.

United StatesDinner menu was kind of expensive and food was kind of plain, but I guess that's part of expensive hotels, they don't want to upset anyone with anything too flavorful. The tour desk across the way that I'm not sure if it's part of the hotel, or shares ownership, or if they just refer you there, was very unhelpful. This hotel is comfortable biking distance from Puerto Viejo, but they never had a bike for me to rent any of the 3 days I was there and every time I asked about a tour, they weren't running. Could have just been because it was still low season / rainy season, but it felt like the idea of selling anything at that tour desk had been totally abandoned. The bar near the beach closes down early, which seems like a shame because people really seemed to like to hang out and socialize there. It would be good to keep it open late.
Room was very spacious and luxurious, hotel maintenance was super quick to fix a wifi issue, right in front of the beach if that's a main activity for you. The bed was huge and comfortable, the room is very modern. The breakfast and coffee were great. There's a nice cantina across the street with snacks and general supplies.

LatviaWe stayed at Ocean villa which was above restaurant (all Ocean villas are above main building). The walls are not soundproof. Our Villa (which is not villa but the room) was next to the cooler or restaurant conditioner, which was all day very loud. The restaurant switched it off around 8:30pm every night. Our daughter stayed at Kinkaju Cabina. This Cabina was cheaper however we found it more comfortable. It was off the restaurant area (in comparison all Ocean Villas are above restaurant area) and even have AC.
The location of the hotel is perfect.

United StatesThere really wasn't anything that I did not like.
Banana Azul is a tropical paradise. It has a rustic flair to it, with its wooden structure and beautiful carvings lit by thousands of white lights. The beach is a lovely soft black sand, hence its name, Playa Negra. Beach chairs are are situation some under palm tree umbrella tables. There is also a massage hut on the beach. The room was lovely, with its high ceiling and beautiful terrace, where you can sit and watch waves crash on the shore or while lying in the hammock. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

AustriaWe did not love the brown bathroom towels, the room was also a bit dark. Nothing major.
Such a great property, a little piece of paradise on a black sand beach. The staff were very friendly and helpful, food was good for dinner and breakfast also. The property is 100 m from the beach and it is perfect to enjoy the warm Caribbean sea. There is also a lot of wildlife to enjoy, all sorts of birds, squirrels and sloths. We had the small Kinkajou cabana and it was sufficient for 2 people. We would definitely like to go back and stay longer.

CanadaOne thing about the property is the wifi can be spotty. We found in the treehouse that wifi only worked in one corner, and only worked in certain spots on hotel grounds.
We loved waking up and being steps away from the ocean. The staff are all very nice and go above and beyond. We stayed at the treehouse and it was a very nice place. Very spacious and perfect for two couples. The restraunt was very good and we enjoyed breakfast every morning. We loved the location being away from the main part of town, allowed us to have quiet nights, but also close enough we got to town in no time.

AustraliaThe plastic roof over half the room and bathroom. Woken up ever half hour when fruit from the tree came crashing down from above. Staff start making noise upside the room from 5;30-6 am. Bathroom needs updating.
Nice beach. Great view from the room. The room was like being in a pirate ship with doors and a deck that open out into nature. We loved the room and deck.

United StatesSome amenities were missing is the room like coffee maker and hair dryer, but we requested them and brought them to us. Just ask and they will get it. Very difficult to get suggestions about things in the area. We were always referred to excursions desk. We rented a car so we didn’t need transportation to all the things they were selling. Obviously they want to make money on these and for some people that is what they want without the hassle of transportaion and such. We like to venture out on our own. we don't like the group trips.
This resort is in one of the best locations. The beach is amazing. The staff are wonderful and seem happy to help in any way. The free breakfast is a bonus and it is very good. The staff were very accomodating. The hotel offers beach food and drink ordering and are not outrageously expensive. Everything can be charged to your room. You can tip on each order or we chose to tip on our checkout, as the whole staff shares the tips.We stayed in 3 different rooms because of our unique circumstance (The were very accomodating for us). We stayed in the Queen Ocean View, the Villa suite with splash pool, and the Banana House. The queen ocean view was nice, but also right above the bar/restaurant. No A/C, but a good breeze with the 2 fans. Typical hotel room amenities. The Villa was big, 2 floors, and we loved the splash pool and outside dining area. Somehow mosquitos were getting in but after we closed the screens in addition to the glass sliders, it was fine. For some reason, they have an old big tub area filled with water and green plants. I don't think it is a good idea though because that draws mosquitos. The queen room was wide open and we did not have any issues with mosquitos. This room included a kitchen with eveything you need. The Banana House was our favorite but missing a few necessities like a coffee maker and hair dryer. It has 2 bedrooms, kitchen, livingroom, outside dining. We had a sloth in our back yard that climbed down to get out of the rain. The beach here is amazing.
