San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala
Positive section of review
The cabin is located right on the bank of the lake, offering a stunning view once you leave the compound (there is a fence there for security reasons!) and the inside is cute and cosy. The kitchen equipment is slightly limited but was good enough for some tacos in front of the lake. The staff were very friendly and patient (I arrived not knowing it was cash-only, but they were trusting enough to let me go to the cash machine in my own time). Situated about 5 minutes walk from the village, it doesn't take long to reach the restaurants and bars, though is far enough to not be bothered by the noise.

It was slightly awkward having to unlock the padlock and take of the chain to the compound every time I wanted to enter/leave. The outside toilet is also slightly inconvenient at nighttime, but I suppose that's what you get if you want to stay in a cute and affordable cabin by the lake.

The staff were all very friendly (I assume the two managers are a couple with a baby, which is sweet) and were very helpful, including accommodating my dietary needs at breakfast. The swimming pool isn't huge but was clean and pleasant, and the hotel is only a few minutes away from the beach and bars whilst still being located far enough away so as to not be disturbed by the noise of the town. I ended up staying an additional night and actually stayed in two rooms, both of which were comfortable. There is also a kind of chill out area with hammocks, which is exactly what I wanted.

The room was spacious, and we had booked the double double option, which provided plenty of space. While the property does not have air conditioning, a fan was provided upon request, which was appreciated. The bathroom offered reliable hot water and good water pressure, although the shower head is in need of replacement as it caused water to spray unevenly. The mattress was noticeably soft on one side and would benefit from being replaced. The breakfast was enjoyable and varied over the two days, which added a nice touch to our stay

Omg, this is seriously the nicest hostel I've ever stayed in, floor to ceiling doors on all the toilets and showers, rainhead showers, each bunk has curtains, a shelf and it's own light!! The common areas are so beautiful and it has an adorable cafe attached!! Also I never saw someone NOT cleaning, there was always someone mopping or wiping the dorms, bathrooms and common areas, (also the free breakfasts were phenomenal) I was so sad to leave!!!(Also the price?!?! Insanely good!)

Flores, Guatemala
Positive section of review
The guesthouse is located towards the northern side of Flores Island, not too far from the water and only about a 7-minute walk to the YO AMO PETÉN sign where the buses depart from. The manager was very friendly and helpful (I think he was called Pablo?), so much so that I booked the Tikal tour through him as well. Flores is very safe so it wasn't an issue walking near the guesthouse at night. My room felt surprisingly private and with good (and much needed) air conditioning.
Lanquín, Guatemala

The staff were very friendly and helpful, not just in reception but also in the restaurant/bar. This was especially true when I needed help about how to reach other parts of Guatemala (I ended up booking the Selmuc tour and a private shuttle through the hotel). The pool was a good size, the room was comfortable and the hotel is located in the middle of some fantastic green scenery. Extremely good value for money!
Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala
Positive section of review
The flat was a good size with pleasant beds and, although I didn't use the kitchen facilities, the equipment looked new. It's located slightly further away from the centre of Antigua but still only a 10-15 minute walk away from the action, which some might actually consider an advantage. The host was also very friendly and responsive.

I had to pay in cash and therefore had to go to the cash machine again, but I later realised that this is common with accommodation in Guatemala so would be better prepared next time. There is also a lack of direct sunlight in the flat, but if you're staying in Antigua, you probably don't intend to spend all day indoors anyway!
Cobán, Guatemala

The room itself was acceptable, although noise from other guests late at night made it difficult to rest. The only positive was the location, with a nearby shopping mall, grocery store, and the town square with shops and restaurants.

The real problem was with breakfast and the way charges were handled. The meal was fine, but not included in the room rate, which we understood. What we did not expect was to be deliberately misled. We specifically asked if coffee was included, and the waiter confirmed it was. At checkout, however, we were charged for the coffee, plus an extra fee for a splash of milk. To make matters worse, after I accidentally dropped a small dish that had contained ketchup, we were charged an outrageous 35Q for it. This is blatant overcharging and feels like taking advantage of customers. Between the dishonesty, the hidden charges, and the extortionate fee for a minor accident, this was a very negative experience.
