We stayed in the Lake View Room, which the hostel generously upgraded us to. The room was spacious and comfortable, with a beautiful balcony overlooking the lake. The property is surrounded by lush gardens and offers truly stunning views—definitely a highlight of our stay. Pros: Gorgeous lake views and garden Spacious room Daily housekeeping, which was unexpected but appreciated

Cons: Basic amenities: Wi-Fi is only available in common areas, showers were occasionally unreliable (though staff resolved issues quickly), and there’s no fan or air conditioning. The room occasionally had a drainage smell—not pleasant, but likely beyond the hostel’s control. While this place is advertised as a family friendly/hotel the overall feel and setup are very much that of backpacker hostel, which may not match all expectations. The family dinners, while a nice concept, don't speak to local cuisine. The most significant issue for us was the overall vibe. The environment felt dominated by a narrow demographic which created a somewhat exclusionary atmosphere. There are frequent social events (quizzes, BBQs, themed parties), which often go late into the night—sometimes past 1 a.m. there's a balance to be had between social activities and also consideration that not all guests need to drink/be loud to enjoy their holiday. It was also hard to overlook the clear divide between foreign volunteers in guest-facing roles and local Guatemalan staff handling cleaning, cooking, and maintenance - and who had to deal with the disgusting mess left behind by guests after socials. Overall, there was an unbalanced dynamic which felt incredibly extractive, particularly in a small community like Santa Cruz. Rather than fostering cultural exchange, the setup seemed to prioritize recreating a Western-style comfort zone for travelers, with little reflection on the host culture or local impact. We wouldn’t return, and we hope the management takes time to reflect on how their model affects both guests and the surrounding community. For travelers seeking a more respectful, culturally engaged, and equitable experience, we’d recommend looking elsewhere.

Beautiful hotel / hostel - stunning garden and cafe. Nice breakfast included! They were very kind in setting our room for our anniversary- but the rooms are VERY small for the price! Very expensive for a basic en suite room, but the bed was very comfortable.

Small room with no safe or wardrobe - very expensive

It was a very comfortable bed and the communication with the staff was great. They also let us keep our luggage in our room after checkout which was really helpful.

In my opinion it was a bit pricey and could have been a bit cheaper for what it was.

The location is great. The place is well-maintained. The room we stayed in had a very nice balcony. Breakfast was tasty.

Majorly overpriced. A basic room with an uncomfortable bed. The included breakfast is nice but a lot of things are extra payment and are very expensive. The staff we encountered were not very helpful. Overall - we expected a much better value for our money.
San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala

The hostel is close to the market and the lake. The staff is nice. The room was clean.
Negative section of review
Very noisy. There's noise from the children in the house ( it's run by a family)- during the night too. San Marcos generally is very noisy - strong endless fireworks, loud music from 7am, barking dogs, children inside the house crying.. I was with earplugs day and night. I would find a quieter hostel next time. I was told that there are quite places in SM. The family is nice, the kitchen had most of What you need for cooking.

You do have to go into another room for the bathroom and there’s no door between the bedroom and the little kitchen area.

The location is good - close to the centre, many cafes.

The windows of most rooms are not facing the outside/streets but to the corridor - so no fresh air and no privacy! For me it's a breaking deal, I had to take a more expensive room, so I can have fresh air and privacy. The ad of the room didn't say the room is dark, depressing, and no privacy ( when you open the window - people see you from the corridor). Can't really recommend. The staff was nice and helpful. Dorms don't have windows as well. I got sick after sleeping there one night /: The location itself was good.
