How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewIt's in an excellent location with many branches of public transport very close to the house. The houses and surrounding architecture are very charming, and it's perfect if you're a researcher visiting ETH or the University of Zurich, trying to save some money. The property has a great kitchen and impeccable shower facilities (the quality was surprising, since they are, after all, shared).
The house has slightly tiled foundations, so you need to be a bit careful climbing up the stairs. The ceiling in my room was a little low, so taller people might need to be more cautious.

Verified reviewNothing!!
The room was not as advertised, the kitchenette did not have cooking facility like hot plate or microwave. We have to use a shared kitchen. This is not what we have paid for. The day we entered the room was smelly with urine smell. Not sure if it was used and not cleaned. Also the room was damp and smelly due to no proper ventilation. On one night the at 12.30am guest were knocking our door so let them in. Kitchen facility was poor without any cooking facility, even though it was advertised as kitchenette. The damp and smelly room. The noise from the road (especially tram), due to the underground location. Very rude responses from the owners, not professional at all. Requested for bathroom mat and they didn't even bother to respond.

Verified reviewI didn't receive my check in code for the hotel in time. I wanted on the doorstep for two hours and I called the hotel many times, sent doesn't of messages without getting a response. I had to book another hotel in the end and requested a refund - just as four other people who had booked two other rooms and couldn't get in either. I have received no response to this request either. This place seemed lto be a hoax. I have filed a complaint with Booking.com. Still haven't got my money back
Again, the property seemed to be a hoax: I couldn't get in, couldn't get hold of them and they didn't communicate or apologise in any shape or form, neither have they refunded the money

Verified reviewThe place is clean and comfortable.
No air conditioning (we stayed now at summer) and a very bad fan. Rude staff. Extremely noisy location during the night. It was a nightmare and we could not sleep for the 2 nights we stayed there. I will never return or wouldn’t recommend to anyone. Its a shame because the house itself is clean and comfortable, if they had proper air ventilation we would be able to close the windows (hence the noise from the street) and sleep well, and this accommodation would be a 10/10!!! But instead of improving, the staff replied me back with the most unprofessional response when I complained, saying “why have you booked with us them”. It’s a shame.

Verified reviewPrestine location, 200 m to tram station. Very clean and spacious rooms, easy and smooth self-check in and check-out.
Since the lavatory is shared the cleanliness was not so good

Verified reviewEasy transport links, good location.
Given the check in code late, so we were stuck in the train station waiting for over 2 hours.

Verified reviewWe were excited to stay at the Hermes guest house and would have been very happy to have actually been able to stay in the room that we reserved about a month ago. Unfortunately, because it's a contactless stay, there was no one at the guest house to help us. The person (or machine ) with whom I had been communicating never sent us the code to get in the door. This, despite reaching out via email, phone and booking.com messaging system over three different days. We ended up having to book another place. We were eventually sent the door code about 2 and 1/2 hours after our check-in time, which was far too late for our needs. We are actively pursuing a refund.
See above.

Verified reviewvery clean and convenient to the tram
area of town was very quiet with few shops. this wasnt the best value for money as its essentially a hostel but at hotel prices (though recognise Zurich is more pricey than other EU cities)- the rooms were a bit tired- the check in process was fine when it happened but relied on sending texts with the information which came quite late. that said it was comfortable enough.

Verified reviewI did not receive the check-in code on the day of arrival, even though I kept emailing the host. They never replied, so I had to urgently book another hotel. The location is not very close to Zurich Central Station, and the host’s response time is very slow. They are the worst host I’ve ever met.
