How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Checking in was a nightmare! At no stage during the booking process were we made aware that we were booking a privately owned accomodation, so we thought we had booked at the Mantra. It was never mentioned that we would be emailed checking in information. We arrived at the Mantra and the reception staff were unhelpful to the point of rudeness. We walked around the block looking for an alternate entrance with no success and phoned the number on our booking confirmation three times over the course of an hour and got no reply. Another couple sitting in reception overheard our conversations and said they had had the same experience and that they had been emailed details of how to access the key boxes three days before check in. This was the first time we had heard that key boxes were involved. I checked all my emails from booking.com and there was nothing there. I even checked the bin in case I had deleted something in error. We had been in the bush so without wifi the day before, so in desperation, I set up a hotspot via my phone to check for any new emails and there was an email sent at 5.44pm the night before giving the information we needed. Surely in a location like Darwin it could be expected that people may be coming from remote locations without access the wifi. All this stress could have been avoided if booking.com had informed us that we had booked a privately owned apartment and that the owners would be sending us check in information. From the owners side, the should have made contact much earlier, perhaps at the time of booking. We totally understand that they owners don’t want to give out codes for the key boxes and far in advance, but just letting us know that they would be sending this information closer to check in would have been very helpful. I have to say, that once she realised they problems we had faced, the owner was very apologetic and even paid for our breakfast at the cafe as compensation which was appreciated.

A second person from our team also texted you to inform you that the room was ready before 2 in case you guys wanted to do an early check in. We always use two different ways to provide all information to avoid this type of inconvenience (private number and email) and this is actually the first time a guest doesn’t receive our text messages coming from two different numbers. Verified reviewThe room is quiet and has everything I required for a 3 night stay. There are a few good places to eat (breakfast or dinner) within 2 minutes walk. The checkin process was simply and it was very well explained. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating.

Verified reviewKatheryn was spot on with communication and flexible with check-in. The apartment was pristine, roomy and homely. It is on the same level as the pool and gym which is superb. It is in a great part of town so we could walk to plenty of attractions but it was quiet. The bed and bedding is A1 quality too!

No hair dryer. TV a little small. No top sheet. Only one doona- suggest other lighter options.
Hi Peter! Thanks for booking with us. The hair dryer was in the closet as there is not much space in the bathroom to place it, T.V. size can be seen on the pictures I displayed of my room and top sheets are tucked in to make the bed look neater, they just need to be pulled out. You should have messaged me about it, I do my best to reply as soon as I can. I have even bought band aids and wipes for a guest who had a little incident before checking-in. Always do my best to offer the best service possible.

Chairs were not that comfy, would have preferred a bigger cup for my morning cuppa, the smell as we got into the room hallway was way too strong.
