Fray Bentos is a jewel in Uruguay.
Fray Bentos is a jewel in Uruguay. The city was the home to the biggest meat packing industry in the country, where Fray Bentos products were made and exported to Europe. As such, it has a very visible english and german heritage. A visit to the Museum of Industrial Revolution, as is called now the old meat processing facility, is a trip in time to the first half of the 20th century. Modern Fray Bentos is home to a school of engineering called UTEC, and to the biggest paper pulp factory of the country, a few miles away. Two days is enough to visit the city and its surroundings. A car is very helpful, although you can get there by public transportation (bus)Guest review byRafael FUruguay - 10.0

This is a charming and quiet town with an interesting history of immigration by a group of Russians at the beginning of the last century. We hired an excellent guide, César, of ESETUR to take us out on the Uruguay River, where we enjoyed a really wonderful day learning about the ecosystems. He also provides a tour of the town ant its surroundings.Guest review bydainaCanada - 10.0
Quiet. Pleasant waterfront.
Quiet. Pleasant waterfront. Pretty plazas. interesting remains of the meat industry. We stayed for 24 hours and that proved sufficient but we were glad that we visited. We ate cheaply and well at a roadside stall adjacent to Calle 18 Julio.Guest review byKayeUnited Kingdom - 8.0

I really recommend visiting the Fray Bentos factory which is now disused but of historical interest. Anyone who has opened a tin of corned beef will know it. The tour was great although in Spanish. the outskirts of the town look like something out of the Wild West and then suddenly there are trees and parks and our hotel was on the front along the Ramblas. quite an intriguing place where not many visitors go.Guest review bylinda couplandUnited Kingdom
