FAQs about hotels in Algarve
Sun and Fun in the Algarve
A paradise of yellow sandstone cliffs and turquoise waters that's full of green golf courses and seasoned with delicious food and rich history, the Algarve region in Portugal has lively spots, quiet corners, and inland areas that well deserve a visit. From the banks of the Ria Formosa lagoon in the east, to the high cliffs of Sagres on the southwest tip of Europe, the region is a great option for a sunny holiday and Booking.com will help you find the best hotels in the Algarve.
The name of this Portuguese region comes from the Arabic Al-Gharb, meaning ‘The West’, but before being part of the Moorish empire, it was inhabited by ancient tribes, and successively by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Visigoths.
When it officially became part of Portugal, it gained fame as a centre for trade. The beautiful city of Lagos still offers a picturesque and colourful historic centre that recalls its important position in the area.
Flying into Faro Airport puts the whole region at your fingertips. The best all-inclusive hotels in the Algarve include their own golf course, an activity very popular in this region. If you just want sea and sun, then keep an eye on our deals for the best beach hotels in the Algarve.

Albufeira is by far one of the best places to visit.
Albufeira is by far one of the best places to visit. Went with Hubby, 21 and 24 yr old boy and girl. We visited mid August which we realized was peak season so the beaches were relatively crowded. However there are so many to choose from you can easily find a spot that's not too crowded. Eating out is very affordable on an average night out for family of 4 dinner is under $100, they drive on the R side of the road like the US... the euro is stronger than USD so get the EURO. Two of the fun group things to share: Go on the Barbeque boat/cave tour best deal for your money, Buggy countryside ride, good fun! Stayed 10 days and was on the flight back planning the return trip, only this time were thinking of a fall visit.Guest review byBarbaraPortugal - 10.0

Small and perfectly formed, good location for ferries to the Ria Formosa islands, and Praia Faro beach Cute little old town, good range of restaurants to satisfy all tastes, good transport to and from airport, train services to other towns along Algarve coast For boat trips go along to the yellow house further to the east of the marina and look for all the HOHO and ferry providers. Do not fall for the "group trips" by the central marina - there are many more much better value providers where the ferries depart from! The HOHO to the 3 islands for 35 euros is very good value, valid all day until the final ferry goes back to Faro, and great fun in the bright yellow RIB boats Just be aware that all pavements throughout the old town (sidewalks for the US readers) are all of very shiny stones, little cubes set into cement, which can be very slippery, and therefore not very accessible for those with mobility difficulties. However with a slowed walking pace, they are totally manageable, and obviously you can see more of the town at a slower walk! Roads themselves are cobbled, so use of scooters or push bikes could find it hard going.Guest review byNinaUnited Kingdom - 8.0

A lovely town about an hours drive from Porto airport: a good base to explore further into the algarve (and the west coast). But it’s also a charming place that manages to expertly balance a sense of its history with the need to cater to tourists. I loved it!Guest review byMcGonigleUnited Kingdom - 6.0

The access the majority of the local beaches is via ferry or boat taxi. There is a beach about 20 minutes away you can drive to and park but it can get extremely busy. I think our preference is to be able to access the beach without having to take a ferry or water taxi. Having said that, the beaches are very clean and water is beautiful. The umbrellas and sun chairs are pretty pricey.Guest review byBrownUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Very nice area, I especially liked the marina and enjoyed walking along the sea front. Plenty of restaurants to choose from and nice walk to near by locations along beach. Visited the fish market in Quarteira which was very bust and an experience, there was a fruit and vegetable market also.Guest review byKilrushIreland - 8.0
Alvor is a fairly small resort, made up of a series of small...
Alvor is a fairly small resort, made up of a series of small fairly narrow walkways that are lined with the various restaurants, bars, and small shops. Most of the streets / walkways lead down to the seafront where you find the main three or four fish restaurants, that cook up the catch if the day, for the hundreds of locals, and tourists that decend into the area each evening. Alvor is very family friendly, there are no hen or Stagg parties, and no groups of people singing their favourite football chant from the outside of bars. There are families walking round of an evening, deciding where to eat enjoying their break away, removed from the normal treadmill of life. So great relaxing location, lots of places to eat and drink, in a small fairly compact location,.Guest review byPhilipUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Carvoeiro is a great place to use as a base camp, especially for families looking to see the area. The boardwalk is awesome and we explored the caves and jumped from one of the cliffs. We went on the sunrise kayak tour from Carvahlo beach to see Benagil cave, which was amazing and ended up spending the whole day at Carvahlo Beach. Silvas is close by and worth a day trip as well.Guest review byjohnnieUnited States - 10.0

A beautiful town with everything you need on a family holiday all within an easy walk of most accommodation. Not too busy which was an added bonus and the locals are all very friendly. A stunning beach and plenty of local attractions that will immerse you in the history of the area and Portugal. A visit to the fort is a must for history buffs and watching the sunset at the lighthouse is essential.Guest review byAndrewNew Zealand - 10.0
