First impressions of Whangarei was it was a small town, the roads were a bit confusing to navigate, the first few people we came across in the town area were rough and quite rude. As we went around the basin area we met some lovely people on walks. We found a nice park and ate at a few places. There were plenty of options for people with food intolerances. Overall it was nice to spend a couple of days there, but I'm not sure if I'd want to spend any longer there.Guest review byJodyNew Zealand - 10.0
Paihia is absolutely stunning.
Paihia is absolutely stunning. I visited most recently in Winter and loved taking the kids over to Russell to see some true NZ history. But the first time I visited was Summer and that is when you should definitely visit. Its out of this world. Great food outlets, pubs, walks and views. What a true paradise!Guest review byBrendonNew Zealand - 10.0

Kaitaia is exactly how you find it - unpretentious, with all the stores you need to make your stay comfortable. Do support all the local businesses - get your nails done, purchase some books, dine out, visit the Saturday market!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

I have been to Russell a couple of times before but only as day visits so to be honest Ive only stayed in the little township itself but loved that. This time I stayed a night to attend a function. The motel was the icing on the cake because where you stay can make or break a stay anywhere. The view of the harbour below with boats anchored..you couldn't beat. I want to come back..and my friend and I intend to. It's handiness was great. Great afternoon of shopping..something for everyone & delightful 'The Grazing table' cafe for home cooked sweets with delicious coffee. Would have liked to spend more time in the fabulous looking book store..great looking coffee table books on display but I ran out of time. There is something for everyone here. Russell town can easily be walked around in a short time without stopping..but who wants to do that. It's a lovely, interesting quaint place with a lovely harbour looking over to Paihia where you go to connect to main highway..eventually. A day passenger ferry runs regularly from Paihia & to. There are other areas to visit over the hill and the car ferry over from Opua is very quick and efficient. And least but not forgotten..the fantastic Duke of Marlborough hotel and accomodation with its elegance gracing the shoreline is a highlight. I had a lovely evening supportng the Recuse Helicopters fundraising event..it was spent under gorgeous chandelier lighting with all the simple but lovely table settings. Surely a grand gentleman which began in 1827 as 'Johnny Johnsons Grog Shop' by an ex convict come good!Guest review byYvonneNew Zealand - 4.0
This was a memory trip, so it was the first time.
This was a memory trip, so it was the first time. SORRY, I had to mention the incident, but wiser to leave it. Now you wanted a report, I only mentioned it in case something was wrong and could happen to somebody else. It has gone no further. You have done well in the decorating, and perhaps we will come again CaroleGuest review bycaroleNew Zealand - 10.0

Mangawhai is a quiet seaside, small town but it has everything you need for a wonderful seaside holiday. Lovely restaurants, safe boating, absolutely stunning beach for walks. Colourful quintessential kiwi baches are everywhere surrounded by Pohutekawa and other natives trees full of birds.Guest review byJacquiAustralia - 6.0

Everyone said you must go to Shnapper Rock Cafe. Well too expensive for us. $110 for a steak?? $110 for a lamb roast?? We found that incredible so no lovely dinner out for us. We did have a cheaper lunch but really wanted a great dinner.Guest review byRichardNew Zealand - 6.0

The Left Bank Hotel is the jewel in the crown for this small town - a lovely place to stay. We did the Twin coast cycle ride and stayed two nights. There were some kids doing burn-outs when we arrived and it's obvious that there isn't a lot of money about. Having said that we met some wonderful locals over the two days that we were in the area, and their stories and commitment to the cycle trail were truly inspiring! When we left we decided to stop in at the Ngawha hot springs, just outside town. this is a great complex and well worth the detour!Guest review byJeremyNew Zealand - 8.0
